Thank you 2011

 Thank you 2011

Is it just me, or is every year going by quicker and quicker?  This year felt like it flew by, but I have to say, it’s been one of the most rewarding and enjoyable years I’ve had.  Here are my favourite and most memorable things from 2011:

1.  I began my career in Marketing

It was around Xmas last year when I made the transition from sales to marketing, and I couldn’t be happier.  I love my job and I’m so thankful for the amazing things I’ve been able to do because of it – and thank you for those who have supported the brand and the products I’ve launched into the market this year.

2.  I began blogging

Through my new job, I got to know the wonderful Beauty Bloggers around Australia, and some (you know who you are) gave me the kick up the proverbial to start my own beauty blog just over 6 months ago.

I have thoroughly enjoyed blogging: from doing 1-2 posts a week to now 3-4 (still sporadic I know), giving my blog the makeover it needed, braving FOTD, to trying my hand at things I’ve never done like nail art - I’ve learnt so much every step of the way. Thank you to my wonderful readers who have given me so much encouragement :’)

 Thank you 2011

3.  Attending the inaugural ABBW as both a blogger and PR

I was lucky enough to have been invited to attend ABBW as one of the bloggers even before I started blogging.  But I am so glad that I ended up blogging prior to the event, as it gave me so much more appreciation for all the events and topics of discussion.  As nerve-wrecking as it was, I also enjoyed representing my brand at the ABBW.  Thank you The Plastic Diaries and You’ve Got Nail for the invitation, and all the attending beauty bloggers for the help and support for the Masterclass.

4.  Being a part of a sorority (MBBE)

Where would I be without the wonderful #MBBE?  They are bunch of crazy talented, passionate gals who are caring and supportive of each other.  Every time we get together there would be loads of laughter, food and obsessive beauty talk.  Thank you for welcoming me into the group.

 Thank you 2011

5.  Discovering new products

Not so good for my wallet or tiny apartment, but I loved trying so many products that I would have never tried before!  I LOVE Clinique Chubby Sticks, solved my hair woes, and ventured into the world of OPI.  Thanks to my job and being a blogger – I now live and breath beauty every moment, everyday (Amen).

 Thank you 2011

All in all, I had a fabulous 2011.  So fabulous, that what I want to do in 2012 is MORE of what I’ve done this year – more blogging, and more beauty marketing!  I am a big believer that passion is key to happiness, and I want to keep that passion aflame by challenging myself to do better.

New Years Eve (NYE) Manicure

Following my Christmas Manicure, I was super inspired to do more nail art!  So here’s what I’ve done for NYE – I’ve kept this a little simpler and just did 3 different patterns.

 New Years Eve (NYE) Manicure

The base colour for all but one nail is the glorious OPI Russian Navy (reviewed and swatched here), which is the perfect colour for summer night’s sky.  Like the Christmas mani I did the nail arts on fake stick-on nails so I can have pretty patterns on both hands.

The 3 patterns are: red fireworks, silver shooting-star fireworks, and masquerade mask.

Red Fireworks:

  • OPI Russian Navy (shimmer dark blue) – base coat
  • Face of Australia Molten Metallics Flaming Lava (metallic red) – drawn on with a fine brush in radiating star shapes
  • Face of Australia Molten Metallics Gold (metallic shimmer gold) - dotted over the red with fine brush
  • Face of Australia Barbados Orange You Glad You Came? (shimmer orange) – dotted over the gold as centre of firework
  • Rokk96 Bejewelled (clear with silver glitter of various sizes) – top coat

Silver (Shooting Star) Fireworks:

  • OPI Russian Navy - base coat
  • Face of Australia Molten Metallics Titanium (silver) - thin diverging lines drawn on with fine brush
  • Face of Australia Colour Pro Cool Cotton (white) - drawn over the silver with a bulb at the end
  • Rokk96 Bejewelled - several top coats with this

 New Years Eve (NYE) Manicure

Masquerade Mask:

  • Face of Australia Molten Metallics Titanium - base coat
  • OPI Russian Navy - masquerade mask drawn on with a fine brush and the base of the nail
  • Face of Australia Molten Metallics Gold - for the feathers coming up from centre of the mask
  • Face of Australia Molten Metallics Flaming Lava - dotted onto the bottom of the feathers
  • Rokk96 Bejewelled - several top coats with this, applied from bottom of the nail upwards to blend out the navy colour

That’s it!  This mani is quite quick to do and is so sparkly – great for NYE icon smile New Years Eve (NYE) Manicure

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and got lots of nice pressies!  Mr Ronan and I celebrated Christmas eve with my family, and actual Christmas Day with his – so we’ve been eating and drinking for 2 days in a row icon razz GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

As Mr Ronan has quite a big family, for the last few years the adults take part in Kris Kringle – which I totally love cos it saves shopping time, and everyone gets to pick exactly what he/she wants.

This year I asked for some Circle Lenses.  In case you don’t know, Circle Lenses are colour contact lenses that are bigger than the normal iris.  Why bigger?  It’s to give you cute doe-eyes.  And when teamed with false eyelashes, you get the killer combo: doll-like eyes that are sparkly and innocent icon smile GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

I got 3 colours from the GEO Bambi series – Green Apple, Sesame Grey and Chocolate.

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

  • Manufacturer: Geo Medical
  • Life Span: 1 Year Disposable
  • BC: 8.6 mm
  • Diameter: 15.00 mm
  • Water content: 38%
  • Power range: 0.00 to -8.00

Green Apple:

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle LensesI was hesitant in getting this colour as I was worried it would look too “out there” and alien-like.  But I love them!!  The green shows up quite natural and really pretty on dark eyes.

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

I teamed these lenses with green eyeshadows and raspberry lips on Christmas Day, and thought it looked rather fabulous icon biggrin GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

Sesame Grey:

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

These were not from KK – I actually purchased these a while ago.  I have to say I don’t really like these – you can see that it has specks of light grey and gold which make them reflect blue/green especially in flash photography.

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

So rather than looking sparkly eyed, it makes you look startled.  This is a common problem with grey circle lenses though – I’m still to find a pair that does not do the same thing.

Chocolate:

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

I love these – the combination of dark, reddish and gold browns make the eyes an adorable caramel colour.  And it looks really natural.

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle LensesI find the GEO Bambi series to be really comfortable and fits well on the eyeballs.  They make getting “dolled-up” so much easier, as you can just chuck on these, some fake eyelashes and a little eyeliner and you’re done!  If you’ve never tried them before I highly recommend you do – they are so much fun to play with!

And still on the subject of Christmas pressies… I got another great one to show off and that is the foldable light box from Mr Ronan!  It’s great cos now I can take product shots on the balcony, and after I’m done I can just fold it and put it away.  LOVE IT!!!

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

GEO Bambi series retail for $32.95 a pair and can be purchased on www.circlelens.com.au (they have heaps of other circle lenses too)

P.S.  Sorry for the crappy tear duct highlight that look like sparkly eye goop.  I’m still recovering from the Christmas festivities so couldn’t be bothered fixing it icon razz GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

Christmas Manicure

Don’t you just love Christmas?  I do!  I love the whole festivity of it – the carols, santa & elves, food, lights… and I had the best memory of putting up a ginormous Christmas tree with my grandparents when I was a child icon smile Christmas Manicure

With the space restriction in our apartment and (a lot of) laziness – I don’t get into the Christmas decor at home.  Well this year is no different – but I’ve decided to jump on the bandwagon of Christmas themed manicure!

 Christmas Manicure

 Christmas Manicure

I cheated a little and did the mani on stick-on fake nails – which made it possible for me to have Christmas nails on both hands (no way would I be able to draw anything with my left hand), plus I am able to walk away and do other stuff whilst the nails are drying.  Nevertheless the whole thing took me about 8 hours – as every nail is hand drawn.

For the colours I used a bunch of Face of Australia nail enamels, as I don’t actually have much of a nail collection at home.  But I was really happy to find all the colours I needed with the exception of a couple of shades.

For tools, I used some clean liquid eyeliner brushes and the ends of paper clips, both of which are quite easy to handle.

Left Hand:

Ring Finger – Christmas Bauble: Colour Pro Cool Cotton, Molten Metallics Flaming Lava, Gold; Rokk96 Bon Bon (glitter).

Little Finger – Candy Cane: Molten Metallics Titanium; Colour Pro Cool Cotton, Lady In Red; Brights Flipside.

I topped some off with clear nail enamel – be careful when doing this as red runs easily.

Review: Biotherm White D-Tox BB Cream SPF25 PA+++

I do believe Biotherm is the first mainstream brand in Australia to launch a BB Cream (before Garnier), and is still the only one available in department stores.

Review: Biotherm White D Tox BB Cream SPF25 PA+++

I’ll be reviewing all BB Creams on the following criteria:

  1. Packaging
  2. Coverage
  3. Dry to touch finish
  4. Natural skin feel
  5. Fragrance
  6. Longevity

Packaging: 4/5

Review: Biotherm White D Tox BB Cream SPF25 PA+++

I really like the shape of the bottle as it’s so cute!  The colour is a pretty peach and with the BB letters makes me think of BaBy soft skin icon smile Review: Biotherm White D Tox BB Cream SPF25 PA+++  The shape is also really cute with the ergonomic curves, and it’s nice and thin so great for travelling.

It has a screw top cap which I like – as I do have a tendency to loose lids.  The only problem is the opening is quite large for a foundation type product, and it seems to go straight into the bottle – so any time you stop squeezing it sucks all the products near the opening back in.  This is a little unhygienic, so make sure you squeeze –> wipe nozzle onto back of hand to get all the products –> take nozzle away from hand –> release pressure on bottle.

Coverage: 3/5

The formula is like a light face lotion – a little runny and quite light on the skin.  It has a sheer coverage – enough to even out skin tones but not for blemishes or dark circles.  I personally don’t mind it, but may not be enough coverage for some.

Review: Biotherm White D Tox BB Cream SPF25 PA+++

Dry-to-touch finish: 3/5

Like the texture, the finish of this BB Cream is like a light face lotion too.  It stays a little wet on the skin but does not feel sticky.  The skin actually feels quite silky, like after applying a light moisturiser.

But I don’t really like this feel for a base makeup product as it makes applying other makeup (ie. eyeshadow, eyeliner, powder blush) a bit more tricky.  So I still dust over with translucent powder.

Natural Skin Feel: 4/5

This BB Cream is a little grey when first applied, but then adapts to your natural colour after about 5 minutes.  It gives a slight dewy finish, and since it’s so sheer it of course looks very much like your own natural skin.

The drawback is that unless you have good skin already, it’s probably too natural skin looking icon razz Review: Biotherm White D Tox BB Cream SPF25 PA+++

Fragrance: 4/5

The Biotherm White D-Tox BB Cream has a little bit of sunscreen smell when first applied, but after about 10 minutes it completely dissipates so it has no fragrance whatsoever which I like.

This may be partially due to it not being a SPF30+ so there’s less active ingredients.

Longevity: 2/5

Sadly this is where Biotherm White D-Tox BB Cream let me down.  I know I have oily skin, but this BB cream literally slides off my face within 2 hours.  It’s so severe that I actually need to remove the pool of BB Cream that would gather along the bottom rim of my glasses every hour or so >.<

TOTAL SCORE: 20 OUT OF 30

I really wished the Biotherm White D-Tox BB Cream would performed better in its longevity, as that would make it my BB Cream of choice.  For those with dry-ish skin in good condition however, I think you would find this BB Cream quite lovely.

Biotherm White D-Tox BB Cream SPF25 PA+++ retails for AUD$49 and is available from Myer and Adore Beauty.

Review: Secret Key Snail + EGF Repairing Gel Cream

A few months ago I blogged about the latest and greatest skincare craze in Korea: snail creams (read it here).  True to my word, a month or so later I purchased the Secret Key Snail + EGF Repairing Gel Cream and slathered it on my face without qualm.

Review: Secret Key Snail + EGF Repairing Gel Cream

What They Say:
Review: Secret Key Snail + EGF Repairing Gel Cream

Ingredients:
Review: Secret Key Snail + EGF Repairing Gel Cream

My Experience:

The texture is a clear viscous gel that is quite slimy and sticky (I’m guessing that’s the snail slime?).  The slimy texture remains after applying and massaging onto the skin.

Review: Secret Key Snail + EGF Repairing Gel Cream Review: Secret Key Snail + EGF Repairing Gel CreamI applied this religiously onto my face every night, for about 2 months to really give it a chance to work.

Even though it’s slimy, it does get absorbed into my skin over night, and adequately hydrates my oily skin.  There were some brightening and pore tightening effects which I was rather pleased with, but not significant enough for others to notice.

But…. and this is a big BUT – whilst I can tolerate the slimy texture, I just cannot stand the smell.  Ughh the smell!  The gel has a synthetic floral fragrance at first whiff which I dislike, but again can tolerate as long as it doesn’t cause any allergic reactions (which it didn’t).  The unbearable part that comes later is the waft of saliva smell.  I tried holding my breath which actually made it worse, as I end up with a noseful of the scent once I (inevitably) had to start breathing again.  So I take small shallow breaths when applying this.  After 2 months of it, I had to give it up cos I was NOT going to get used to the smell.

If it wasn’t for the smell, I would probably at least finished the jar as I was reasonably pleased with the results.

Being the eternal optimist for eternal youth, I have not given up on snail creams just yet. Next I shall try Missha Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream, which I received a couple of sample sachets for, and later down the track Elishacoy Skin Repair Snail Cream.

Secret Key Snail + EGF Repairing Gel Cream retails for about AUD$25 and is available on Gmarket and Ebay.

FOTD – Brown Smokey Eyes

The smokey eyes look is a classic party look, and is quite easy to do.  I like brown smokey eyes as it’s universally flattering, and more subtle so can take you from dinner to nightclub.

 FOTD Brown Smokey EyesKey Products:

 FOTD Brown Smokey Eyes

Clockwise from top left: 88-palette, Laura Mercier custom palette, Face of Australia Lip Quench SPF30+ Lipstick Iced Almond, Face of Australia Lasting Looks Foundation, Solone Magic Waterproof eye pencil black, Face of Australia Translucent Powder, Face of Australia Opulent Eyes

Face:

Full, natural coverage with the slightest peach blush – coral blush would work quite nicely too.

  • Face of Australia Lasting Looks Foundation Ivory
  • Face of Australia Translucent Loose Powder
  • Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Colour Rose Petal (the bottom right hand colour in the custom palette in above pic)
  • Laura Mercier Matte Eye Colour Fresco (top right hand colour in the custom palette) – contour sides of nose

Eyes:

The key here is to layer the colours from the lashline up to the socket line, using good quality eyeshadow brushes so they blend into each other.  Keep the brows a little lighter than usual, and fake lashes are a must!

 FOTD Brown Smokey Eyes

  1. Face of Australia Eye Primer Matte
  2. Solone Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil Black - draw a thick wing along the top lashline, extending into the inner and outer corners.  Fill in the inner top lashline as that adds to the intensity and make the lashes look thicker.  Also line the bottom lashline but leave the waterline bare
  3. Colour A (matte black) – with a small round eyeshadow brush layer this colour over the black eyeliner and blend 3mm outward
  4. Colour B (matte dark brown) – with a medium eyeshadow brush layer this colour over the black eyeshadow and blend outward and fill the entire socket
  5. Colour C (shimmer terracotta) – with a blending brush layer this colour over Colour B and extend just over the socket line.  Then use a small eyeliner brush to soften the lower eyeline with this colour
  6. Colour D (shimmer brown) – with a medium eyeshadow brush layer this colour onto the inner 1/3 of upper lid
  7. Colour E (satin white) – use an angled eyeline brush and fill in the waterline with this colour
  • Kiss Me Heroin Make Long & Curl Mascara – for top and bottom lashes
  • Face of Australia Eye Definer Brown - to fill in the brows
  • Fake Lashes Princess Lee No. 7 and Chanti No. 135 – layering a cris-cross lashes over a natural fluttering one creates multi-layered lashes that still look natural

Lips:

Lips are kept nude to contrast against the bold eyes.

Review: Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++

As you may be aware already, BB cream has been extremely popular in Asia for the past few years, and is starting to gain popularity in Australia.

In the strictest definition, BB stands for Blemish Balm, and designed as an all-in-one base product that provides coverage, sun protection and is good for the skin.  In terms of formulation it should be mineral based, and contains 80% skin-healing ingredients.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be reviewing one BB cream a week.  These are the criteria that I’ll be judging them on:

  1. Packaging
  2. Coverage
  3. Dry to touch finish
  4. Natural skin feel
  5. Fragrance
  6. Longevity

I purchased the Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream on a basis that I have a foundation by them that I loved.

Review: Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++Packaging: 2/5

I really love the concept of the packaging in that it’s a squeezable tube with an airless pump.  So there’s little wastage and is hygenic.

Review: Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++In reality, however, the pump does not offer any control – you either get 1 pump full or nothing, and is a bit ‘splattery’.  So the wastage comes from dispensing too much product, most of the time.

Coverage: 4/5

The formula is like a cream foundation and covers like one, and is buildable so it can be used as concealer too. (BTW pic below left is one pump – way too much!)

Review: Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++Dry-to-touch finish: 1/5

To me, a good BB cream should eliminate the regular sunscreen-foundation-concealer-powder routine.  So it should have a satin or dry-touch finish.  Not powdery or wet, just how the skin feels after appropriate level of cleansing.

Unfortunately this is where the Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream fails, it stays wet and sticky to the touch, so I have no choice but to set it with powder like I would a foundation.

Natural skin feel: 3/5

I like the natural dewy finish that this BB cream gives, even with a light sweep of translucent powder over it.  But again, as this BB cream behaves like a cream foundation – it just sits on top of my skin and I am aware that I am wearing foundation.

Fragrance: 4/5

I’m not overly picky when it comes to fragrance of cosmetics.  The main thing that I look out for with SPF products is that it doesn’t smell like sunscreen.  The Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream just has a regular foundation smell which I don’t mind.

Longevity: 3/5

Even though this is like a cream foundation, I found it to have fairly good longevity and does not wear off in patches.  Bear in mind though, I have extremely oily skin so most base products do not last more than 6 hours on my face.

TOTAL SCORE: 17 OUT OF 30

Unfortunately the Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream does not fare well – as a foundation it would be lovely, but as a BB cream it fails to deliver some very important benefits.

Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++ retails for about AUD$20 and is available in all Etude House flagship stores Asia-wide.  For non-Asia residents please try reputable Ebay sellers.

Vidal Sassoon Big Hair Styler and a lazy girl’s guide to blow-dry

Ever since the great haircut I got at Sui Hair Salon 2, I’ve been looking for ways to recreate the same slick do I went home with that day.

Vidal Sassoon Big Hair Styler and a lazy girls guide to blow dryThe roots and ends are pretty good, thanks to the skills of Sally the magic hairdresser. But as you can see, I’m having trouble with the fringe and crown, both areas taking their natural positions either side of my head – looking limp and frizzy.

So what to do?  This is the answer - Vidal Sassoon Big Hair Styler.

Vidal Sassoon Big Hair Styler and a lazy girls guide to blow dryWhat They Say:

The Big Hair Styler creates gorgeous volume and shine as you style. It combines the benefit of a hairdryer with a rotating, motorised brush in the one appliance to give you total styling control in one hand. This unique styling action allows the large ceramic barrel to create fullness and body as you style whilts the soft bristles create ultimate shine and smoothness.

How to:

1.  Wash hair and towel dry.

2.  Apply your choice of leave-in hair conditioner and treatment.  I use L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil (review here).

3.  Run a wide tooth comb through your hair to de-tangle, then section your hair to the desired directions.  For me I want the fringe to go forward, and the crown to go backward.

Vidal Sassoon Big Hair Styler and a lazy girls guide to blow dry4.  If you have long or thick hair, leave the hair in this parting until it’s 90% dry.

5.  Use the Vidal Sassoon Big Hair Styler to blow dry in the same direction as the parting.  You’ll need to work on a small amount of hair at a time – as below video:

6.  Apply some more treatment products to the end.

And viola!  Smooth, voluminous hair that defies the natural parting of the hair.

Vidal Sassoon Big Hair Styler and a lazy girls guide to blow dryI still need to improve the way I do my fringe, but I love how it now naturally falls to the side to frame my face.  And the crown looks much nicer in a slight dome shape!

If you have stubborn middle-parting hair like mine, or want to simplify your blow-dry, then I highly recommend Vidal Sassoon Big Hair Styler.  And in case you’re worried – unlike some bristle round hairbrushes and rollers, this will not tangle and get caught in your hair.

Vidal Sassoon Big Hair Styler retails $99.95 and is available in leading department stores and electrical appliance outlets nationally.  For more details visit http://www.vssassoon.com.au/

No Hawkers No Bloggers

A funny thing happened yesterday, when Mr Ronan and I went to a newly refitted coffee store/cafe near our place.  Printed on its door is this:

No Hawkers No BloggersSay what?  Are bloggers getting a bad rap?

Now this place only does coffee which they take seriously, and a small selection of pastries. Both of which are pretty damn good, so I’m sure they’re not worried about bad reviews.

Maybe they don’t want people going around the store taking pictures, and disturbing other customers?  Or they don’t want bad photos online which may taint their reputation?  I get that, but surely “No Photos” would be a more apt statement?

Perhaps some bloggers go in there and ask for freebies and/or discounts?  I sincerely hope not, but the store just has to say No – it’s not that hard right?

The last time I checked, Bloggers don’t have the word tattooed on their foreheads, so how would this place spot them?  Is it like a point system: Tweet – strike 1, Take a pic – strike 2, and writing on I-Pad – strike 3?

And what would happen if they find out?  Would they chase me out of the store and ban me from ever having coffee there (“And… stay out!”)?

So many unanswered questions… which leads to the most ironic thing – I’m so perplexed now I’m blogging about it!

One thing I do know though – next time I’m in there Imma gonna put my head down, drink my coffee, eat my pastry, won’t touch my phone, and get out before the staff sees through me.  For the time being, I’m enjoying my coffee at the comfort of my own home – and blog whilst drinking it icon smile No Hawkers No Bloggers
