Beauty Insider: Product Expiry Dates – to obey or not to obey?

Following my post on Aust L numbers, I realised just how many terminologies there exist in the beauty industry that I take as a given, but can still be a mystery to a lot of people. So now to Product Expiry dates, everyone knows what it means, but which products should have them?  Where are they?  And most importantly, should they be complied with?

There are no rules as to where expiry dates are shown, as long as they can be found at point of purchase and whilst using the product.  To save time and labour, it almost always is printed with the batch code, and NOT on front of pack to maintain aesthetics.   So expiry dates can usually be found printed on back of packs, within the crimp on top of tubes, or on the bottom of product.  In Australia, expiry is in the form of Month-Year.

First and foremost, all products under the regulations of TGA (medicines & therapeutics) must have expiry dates.  This thus includes sunscreens:

Beauty Insider: Product Expiry Dates to obey or not to obey?

Clockwise from top left: expiry on back of pack; expiry along the crimp (batch code is along the crimp on the other side); expiry on the bottom of product; expiry on the box

Other than TGA products, no beauty products are required to have expiry dates.  BUT you are likely to find expiry on some products still, like fake tans:

Beauty Insider: Product Expiry Dates to obey or not to obey?

Left - fake tan expiry along crimp; R - fate tan expiry on bottom of bottle

… and a lot of cosmeceuticals:

Beauty Insider: Product Expiry Dates to obey or not to obey?

Left - expiry on back of Vitamin C serum; R - expiry on the bottom of Retinol serum

Most of the beauty products, will have a Period After Opening Symbol – this indicates how long you should use the product for, after you’ve opened the primary packaging (ie. where the ‘goo’ is contained in):

Beauty Insider: Product Expiry Dates to obey or not to obey?

It is more costly to have expiry printed on the products, as the supplier is liable for the cost of disposing the product should it not sell by the time it expires.  So why would they do it?  Because those products have active ingredients in them that are crucial in the performance of the product, but the said ingredients can deteriorate over time.

For example, people buy fake tans want to get tanned, and DHA, the ingredient that makes the skin tan, deteriorates and turns green after 2 years – so the product needs to be disposed of after that time, or else you end up with a lot of pale/unhappy/disgusted customers.  Similarly, people buy Vitamin C and Retinol serums purely for the effects that Vitamin C & Retinol would have on the skin, but after those ingredients deteriorate, whilst it wouldn’t cause you any harm, you may as well be putting sorbolene on your face.

Other beauty products have combinations of pigments/fragrances/extracts in some sort of emulsion that is pretty stable, hence no need for expiry.  The period-after-opening safeguards product integrity after exposure to air and contamination after opening.

So what does it mean?

Personally, for all products WITH expiry, I throw out as soon as it hits it.  Expiry is determined by accelerated testing; after the product hits the expiry, there is no proof that it would deliver on its primary promise.  So if you get burnt because you’ve used an expired sunscreen, or find that your fake tan has turned to green water, it’s “too bad so sad” for you, and there would be no reimbursement from the supplier or the retailer.

For products with no expiry but just a Period After Opening symbol, I exercise the Look-Smell-Feel approach: if it looks okay (no change in colour/texture), smells okay (no muskiness) and feels okay (no excess oiliness/dryness), then I would say it’s safe to use.

I do make an exception for essential oils though – they have expiry (as they’re therapeutics), but I continue to use them as long as they smell nice.  That’s because I only use them for their fragrance anyway – but if I were to use them for aromatherapy or skincare purposes, then the same rule as before – throw out as soon as they hit expiry.

Please let me know if there’s any other ingredient/packaging queries on beauty products you would like to know more of – I’ll do my best to answer them in future posts icon smile Beauty Insider: Product Expiry Dates to obey or not to obey?

Missha M Vita BB Cream SPF20 PA++

This is the second Missha BB Cream I purchased – it’s a moisturising one that has a sheerer coverage.  It’s probably not what an oily skin person should buy, but its claim of containing 7 essential vitamin complexes was quite enticing, so I got it anyway icon razz Missha M Vita BB Cream SPF20 PA++

 Missha M Vita BB Cream SPF20 PA++

I’ll be reviewing all BB Creams on the following criteria:

  1. Packaging
  2. Coverage
  3. Dry to touch finish
  4. Natural skin feel
  5. Fragrance
  6. Longevity

Packaging: 4/5

 Missha M Vita BB Cream SPF20 PA++

Like I mentioned in a previous post – I think simple is best when it comes to BB Cream packaging.  The Missha M Vita BB Cream is packaged in a metallic foiled paperboard box, and contained in a flat plastic tube of the same finish with nozzle.  It’s a good combination of utility and presentation.

It looses one point as the nozzle can stand to be a little longer and skinnier – as I find the BB Cream easily drips from the opening.

Coverage: 4/5

 Missha M Vita BB Cream SPF20 PA++

This BB Cream is slightly sheerer than the Missha M Signature Real Complete BB Cream, but still gives pretty good coverage.  It still has a tendency to sink into lines but not overly noticeable due to the dewy finish.

Dry-to-touch finish: 4/5

The texture of this BB Cream is like adding a touch of tinted moisturiser into a thicker BB Cream – so its quite runny and leaves a moist finish.  However even though it feels a little wet to the touch, it’s not sticky and is pretty budge-proof.  I do use a powder over the top, but people with dryer skin can probably do without.

Natural skin feel: 3/5

Missha really does a great job at formulating their BB Creams, this BB Cream is pink when first applied, but adapts to the natural skin colour.  And even for an oily gal like me, it just looks natural dewy rather than shiny.  Combined with its coverage – it’s pretty close to giving me a “my skin but better” look.

I’ll still take 0.5 point off for not being TGA compliant.  Just to clarify, even though BB Creams do not need to have Aust L numbers on it, and the other Asian brands would also have sunscreens without Aust L numbers, I only take points off for Missha.  Why is that?  Because Missha is the only brand that actually have set up their own stores in Australia, unlike SkinFood, Etude etc that are only available in Australia through 3rd party distributors/importers.

But I have to take major points off as this BB Cream broke me out as well!  When I broke out from the Missha M Signature Real Complete BB Cream, I thought it’s just me. And it very well can still be just me, but it’s too much of a coincidence that both BB Creams I picked up from Missha broke me out right?  This one broke me out even worse – after a few days I actually noticed the beginning of red rash-like bumps underneath my skin, which to me signifies bad acne outbreak to come.  I stopped using this immediately and luckily with the use of my Alpha-H products, I didn’t suffer any pimples in the end.

Fragrance: 3/5

The Missha M Vita BB Cream has the smell of plastic and sunscreen when first applied.  It does fade after a while, but remains somewhat synthetic-y, which I dislike.

Longevity: 4/5

Like I’ve mentioned, Missha is really good in terms of formulating their BB Creams.  I would never have thought this type of BB Cream would have a chance of staying on my face, but it actually last a good 3-4 hours.  It does not come off in patches either, which is good.

TOTAL SCORE: 22 OUT OF 30

The Missha M Vita BB Cream scores fairly well, mainly due to its formulation so it ticks a lot of the boxes in terms of how a BB Cream should perform.  But I have to say this is the one BB Cream that I would NEVER touch again, as it would have broken me out in such a big way – I shudder to even imagine!

Missha M Vita BB Cream SPF20 PA++ is available in only 1 shade.  Retails AUD $31.90 from Missha flagship stores Australia-wide (store locations here).

The Ultimate Skincare HG – 3M Nexcare Acne Dressing

This is a post I’ve been meaning to write ever since I’ve started Chasing Elixir, and it’s about The One.  The One is a skincare item that nothing else can replace nor compare with in awesomeness, and that I can/will never live without.  It is an item that should be available worldwide, and everyone needs to have it in their beauty drawer/cabinet/walk-in closet.

The One is… 3M Nexcare Acne Dressing!!! *cue suspense revealed music: da-dum-DAHHH*

The Ultimate Skincare HG 3M Nexcare Acne DressingNexcare Acne Dressing is made of Hydrocolloid dressing, which is an opaque dressing used in medicine to provide a moist wound-healing environment, while protecting from contamination.  It comes in various shapes, mostly circles, to assists in the healing of pimples by sucking out the pus and protecting from getting further inflamed.

I stockpile this little beauty by the dozens, and use it every time I suffer a full-blown pimple breakout or milia.  It comes in packs of 18-72, and is sealed in a plastic sleeve plus a film at the back.

The Ultimate Skincare HG 3M Nexcare Acne Dressing

Before applying the acne dressing, you need to ensure that the area you’re applying to is clean and dry.  It’s also the most effective when the wound is open.  So for a pimple, wait till it’s ripe for squeezing (ie. when you can see a bit of white under the skin), and pop it until the pimple, pus and blood is almost all gone.  For a milia, use a clean blackhead extractor or round end of a clean hairpin to squeeze out the congestion (disinfect the apparatus with some alcohol).

Now we move to the graphic step-by-step account of how the Nexcare Acne Dressing performs its magic – word of warning: DO NOT READ ON FULL STOMACH!

I suffered a major chin pimple a couple of weeks ago.  It started way underneath my skin like a sore red bump, and finally reared its white head a week later.  At which point I squeezed the sucker out (wrapped my fingers with cleansing wipes, and using an outwardly pushing motion) – it was a momentous occasion as the pimple popped and splattered onto my bathroom mirror… SO SO GOOD!!!!

Taking out a new pack of Nexcare Acne Dressing, I first remove the clear film on the back and take an acne dressing of the size that is bigger than the pimple (in this case, the bigger circle).  Each pack comes with a tweezer for this, but I find it easier to peel the dressing off with my fingernail.  Then I simply stick the acne dressing onto what is left of the pimple.

The Ultimate Skincare HG 3M Nexcare Acne Dressing

You can see that whilst the sticker is clear-ish, it’s by no means invisible.  So I only have this on at home or running brief errands.  The best thing to do is apply this before bed time, and leave it on overnight.  The dressing is breathable, and leaving it on overnight maximises its pus sucking power!

Now I need to give you another word of warning – DO NOT READ ON IF YOU HAVE ANY FOOD IN YOUR STOMACH.

Once on the skin, the Nexcare Acne Dressing starts to absorb all the secretion from the skin – which is all the pus and inflammation from the popped pimple.  The amount of secretion depends on the size of the pimple/congestion.  As my chin pimple was of the gigantic proportion, the secretion is no short of epicness in a hugely gross way.

3rd warning… THINK BEFORE YOU READ ON.

The Ultimate Skincare HG 3M Nexcare Acne Dressing

Ewwwwww!!!!  The next morning the acne dressing has absorbed a pile of pus from the pimple – so much so that it has almost come off the skin!  After removing it, I apply some AHA serum and mineral makeup for work.

I continue to apply a fresh acne dressing on the area every night until the pimple is all gone and the area is completely flat.  Then I deal with the hyperpigmentation with L’Occitane Precious Cream.

As the Nexcare Acne Dressing also protects the skin from contamination, I also use it  over whiteheads, and minor congestions to stop them from becoming infected pimples.  Sometimes I go months without needing any, and sometime I churn through them by the packets since 1 sticker only covers a small area.

3M Nexcare Acne Dressing is available in pharmacies Asia-wide.  For non-Asia residents you can purchase them from reputable Ebay sellers – expect to pay around AUD$5 for a packet of 36.

FOTD – Chinese New Year

Following my failure at Chinese New Year Mani, I thought I better try to redeem myself a little with a Chinese New Year FOTD.  This is the makeup I did for the reunion dinner on Chinese New Year eve – as it was a relatively casual affair (just me, my parents, Mr Ronan and his parents), I kept the look subdued with touches of gold, red and black.

 FOTD Chinese New Year

Face:

Since it was a very hot day in Melbourne, I was a bit more heavy-handed with the powder so my makeup holds up.

  • Face of Australia Stick Foundation Ivory
  • Lunasol Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral
  • Face of Australia Translucent Loose Powder

Brows:

  • Face of Australia Eye Definer Brown
  • Laura Mercier eyeshadows – Coffee GroundCafe Au Lait, and Fresco

Eyes:

Combination of gold, red and black – typical colours of Chinese New Year.

 FOTD Chinese New Year

  • GEO Circle Lenses Magic Black
  • Kanebo T’estimo eyeshadow No. 3 – I used the sparkly beige gold for the entire lids and under the lower lashlines, and including inner corners of the eyes
  • 88 Palette Eyeshadow - I used a matte red to accent the outer upper and lower lashlines.  Also used a black eyeshadow over the eyeliner to set it so it doesn’t run down my face as soon as I step outside into the heat
  • Solone Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil Black - I lined the inner upper lashlines most of the way, then took it up and extend towards the outer 1/3.  Did the same with the lower lashlines so the outer 1/3 is more visible.

Lips:

Another reason I kept the eyes simple is so that I can wear a bright red lippy – which is a must for Chinese New Year!

  • Face of Australia Lip Quench Lipstick Forbidden Fruit – applied with a lip brush

We went to Hutong Dumpling Bar and ate heaps!!  To be honest I reckon their dumplings are just okay, but I really love their Sichuan chilli dishes.  My favourite is their 夫妻肺片, which I won’t translate for the non-Chinese readers cos it would most likely sound extremely unappetising.  But I LOVE IT – one plate of this on a bowl of rice and I’m in heaven icon smile FOTD Chinese New Year

FOTD Chinese New YearNear the end of our dinner, a Dragon Dance crew came into the restaurant!  It was so much fun and we made a small contribution of red packet, as it was going to charity. Once we left the restaurant we stood outside and waited for the firecrackers to be lit, and more Dragon dance.  Mr Ronan’s mum absolutely loved it and recorded the whole thing on her Iphone – so cute of her!!! icon smile FOTD Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year Mani (Fail Alert)

Tomorrow is the first day of Chinese New Year and it’s the year of the Dragon, which is both me & Mr Ronan’s birth year!  (We have a very firey household)

So I did a quick mani to get into the festivity – word of warning as you are about to witness an epic fail.  I was (still am) seriously debating whether or not to post this but thought what the hey.  I don’t claim to be an expert on all things cosmetics so here goes.

Chinese New Year Mani (Fail Alert)

I used Face of Australia Molten Metallics in Flaming Lava as the base for all the nails, and only did 2 nail art: Dragon and Fortune.

Dragon:

Dragons are surprisingly hard to draw so I’m sorry for the way it’s turned out!!!  When I practised on paper my dragon looked like reindeer with whiskers.  Once on the nail it looked like Santa after I dotted on the eyes, and then ended up looking like Shrek when I added the eyebrows.  WTF >.<

  • Face of Australia Molten Metallics Gold (metallic shimmer gold) - for face and ears
  • Face of Australia Barbados Orange You Glad You Came? (shimmer orange) - for the antlers and whiskers
  • Face of Australia Colour Pro Scream (black) – eyes
  • Face of Australia Molten Metallics Flaming Lava - for nose and brows

Fortune:

福 (pronounced ) is the Chinese character for fortunate and can be readily seen on Chinese New Year decorations.  As long as you know how to write the character, it’s pretty easy to do this.

I used a foam tip eyeliner brush and wrote the character on with Face of Australia Molten Metallics Gold.

Now back to cleaning my place, and I’ll be having Chinese New Year Eve dinner with my parents, Mr Ronan and his parents icon smile Chinese New Year Mani (Fail Alert)

Happy New Year – wishing everyone prosperity and good health!  恭喜發財!!!

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you would be familiar with my frequent bouts of laziness.  My usual Saturdays involve little beyond cups of coffee and endless hours of Taiwanese drama/variety shows, and I rarely blog on consecutive days.  But this was such an awesome experience, I MUST tell you all about it now!

As one of the sponsors of the Australian Open, Dove was beyond amazing to have offered some of my fellow MBBE ladies centre court tickets, VIP access to the ao club and even chauffeur service to and from the event.  I was lucky enough to be invited by Ponikuta as her plus one!

On arrival, the lovely Laura (PR for Dove) greeted us and took us straight to the ao club. It was certainly a relief to get out of the sweltering heat, and the club is absolutely gorgeous.  It had a dining area, bar and lounge, all of which decadently decorated. After some much needed refreshment (Heineken is also a sponsor – brilliant!) and delicious dinner, we headed to the Dove Marquee.

Getting the VIP treatment at the Australian Open thanks to DoveUnfortunately by the time we got there, the marquee had closed.  The Dove Marquee is open to public, and offers everyone a variety of pampering services and goodie bags – read about it on heartofpearl.  The queue can be long but it’s definitely worth the wait, so make sure you check it out if you’re at the Australian Open!

Then it was time for the game!  I’ve only been to the tennis a couple of times before, both of which were in the corporate boxes with my previous jobs.  I always found the corporate boxes rather sterile, so was really excited that our tickets were for the court seats – AND second row from the front!!!

The first game was Lleyton Hewitt vs Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, which Lleyton won after a 4 hour game.  Apparently Serena Williams, who was playing in the second game against Tamira Paszek, was super annoyed to have to wait so long.  I could certainly feel Serena’s annoyance in the beginning of her game, when she whacked a few balls out of the sidelines rough-handedly.

I know I’ve said it a zillion times before, but I love my MBBE ladies.  We had so much laughs that night, talking beauty (as usual) and sneaky swaps of BB Cream, a new book by a certain Taiwanese beauty blogger, and a pressie for me from Malaysia (thank you Paris B!).  There was also a particularly amusing dialogue between me and Ponikuta at the beginning of the women’s game, which I’m still laughing about ;D

Thank you Dove for being so kind and spoiling us to such a memorable night – I had a *ahem* ball!!

Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream SPF 27 PA++

Lioele is a Korean cosmetic brand launched in 2007, made its mark online and it’s now widely available in stores all over Asia.  It’s owned by LIOELE COSMETIC CO. LTD which has 18 brands in their portfolio.  What’s great to know is that they are ISO certified and have a number of patents for their skincare/cosmetic ingredients.

I requested this as a part of my Kris Kringle (majority made up of circle lenses) – a little mini 5ml tube of Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream SPF 27 PA++.  I know not every brand can afford to do minis but it’s such a great idea – even though it’s so much more expensive per ml for the mini, I much rather pay the 1/4 price for a trial, and not end up with yet another product in my closet (yes that’s where I keep my yet-to-be-used & not-really-used-but-maybe-sometime stash).

Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream SPF 27 PA++

I’ll be reviewing all BB Creams on the following criteria:

  1. Packaging
  2. Coverage
  3. Dry to touch finish
  4. Natural skin feel
  5. Fragrance
  6. Longevity

Packaging: 5/5

The Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream mini is in a pearlised tube with a thin nozzle, whilst the full size is in a flat pearlised tube but also with a thin nozzle.  To me, this is perfect – it’s easy to carry, offers great control in dispensing product, and hygienic.  I really like the logo and entire look of the brand too – it’s really cute and looks so enticing!

Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream SPF 27 PA++

Coverage: 3/5

The formula is like a tinted moisturiser – medium viscosity and colour.  What you would be WOW’d by is the technology – when you start to rub it, it actually forms little water droplets which assists in hydration!!!  It’s seriously like magic happening in front of my eyes, as its creamy texture liquifies – LOOK!!!

Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream SPF 27 PA++

As you can see, the coverage is quite sheer, but is pretty good at evening out skintone. It is buildable but be aware that you will end up going through a fair bit of product.

Dry-to-touch finish: 5/5

The finish of this BB Cream is gorgeous.  As Lioele says:  “Its bisabolol, licorice acid derivatives, and allantoin component soothe your skin and jojoba oil, macadamia nut oil, hyauronic acid derivatives, and marin collagen make your skin moisturize and smooth.”  I find the skin feels velvety soft and not at all sticky – another amazeball!

Natural skin feel: 4/5

The combination of sheer coverage and velvety finish means that the skin actually feels even better than normal, which is great.  The colour is grey when first comes out of the tube, then goes a bit pink after rubbing it in, and then adapts to the normal skintone.

But like the Biotherm BB Cream, unless you have good skin already, this may look too natural.

Fragrance: 2/5

Unfortunately the Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream has the sunscreen smell that I dislike.  Not as strong as an actual sunscreen, but that’s because of its light texture so it’s likely to intensity if you do apply a couple of layers for more coverage.  And the smell doesn’t go away either icon sad Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream SPF 27 PA++

Longevity: 3/5

To be fair, this type of BB Cream (ie. a hydrating one) is probably not to be purchased by people with oily skin, especially in summer.  It lasts about 3 hours on my face before melting off, which isn’t bad considering my skin is as oily as it comes, and we’ve suffered some humid weather in Melbourne lately.

TOTAL SCORE: 22 OUT OF 30

I have to be honest and say that because I’m totally awed by the water technology – I may end up purchasing a full size of the Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream, but only for use during winter.  I am also really impressed by the finish, so will probably try Lioele’s other BB Cream: Beyond the Solution which is suited to oilier skins.

Lioele Waterdrop BB Cream SPF 27 PA++ is available in only 1 shade and retails AUD$5.95 for 5ml and $24.95 for 50ml.  Available on circlelens.com.au.

Review: YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch

Following my last post on skincare items that have been around for more than 30 years, the YSL Touche Éclat must be a cosmetic item that has, or at least close to having, that in history.  Why do I think that?  Because this is the ONE item that I have wanted to purchase for the LONGEST time, probably since my late teens (and if you don’t know how many years it’s been since, well I’m not gonna tell ya!  You’d just have to read through all my past posts to find out icon biggrin Review: YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch ).

Review: YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch

Being a YSL product, you can probably gather that this is a rather expensive item, and that indeed was the main purchase hurdle for me.  Yet the obsession with this product continued through the years, particularly when I travel overseas as I spend all my waiting time at the gate in the duty free shop, gazing at it thinking “should I… or shouldn’t I?”

To cut to the chase I DIDN’T, but I was lucky enough to receive this at the MBBE - and oh my was I overjoyed.  It was a beauty-dream come true!!!

Review: YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch

Ingredients:

Review: YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch

My Experience:

The YSL Touche Éclat is a light concealing fluid that is dispensed through a pen applicator.  You need to click it a dozen times or so the first time you use it, to get the product through the brush tip.

After the first time, I generally use 3 clicks worth of products – and apply it directly to my under eye area, bridge of my nose, and nasolabial lines.

Review: YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch

The formula is quite sheer and sits on the skin for a couple of minutes before it blends into the skin.  I use it on top of my foundation as I’m on team “Concealer-AFTER-Foundation”.

You can see from the swatch above that the YSL Touche Éclat does a good job at concealing uneven skintones and mild capillaries.  I’m thinking it would also be good to cover mild dark circles as the blue veins on my hand is less visible after application.  There is a slight illuminating factor to it as once it blends into the skin, it leaves a slight dewy finish.

However for me, I find the coverage to be not enough.  My under eye problem is not dark circles but rather stubborn red dryish patches that are probably caused by friction against my eyeglasses’ frame.  The YSL Touche Éclat does not cover redness as well.

In addition due to my very oily skin, I usually wear foundations that are semi-solid (stick foundation), solid (mineral powder foundation) or  liquid-to-powder formats.  So when I apply this over my foundation, it does dilute and liquidfy the foundation I already have on my face, and I end up with less coverage on the areas where I need concealers for.  For the nasolabial lines it’s great first applied, but then melts and sink into them after an hour or so.

After some trial and error, I discover that the YSL Touche Éclat is best used on top of foundations that are similar in texture ie. light/sheer liquid foundations that have a dewy finish.  The combination gives a beautiful radiant finish, which you can set with a light dusting of translucent powder.  So I use this on days when my skin is in reasonably good condition, and when I know I don’t need lasting power from my makeup.

I would recommend this product for people with fairly good, normal/combination/slightly dry skins who’s looking for just a little pick-me-up effect from their concealers.

YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch reatils for AUD $55 and is available from Myer, David Jones and selected pharmacies.

Skincare that have endured the test of time: 10 items over 30 years old!

Every now and then, a magazine article is so interesting that it must be shared.  This is from the 2011 Spring Edition of Taiwanese beauty magazine, Queen (女人我最大), which for some reason I totally missed until recently re-reading the issue.

The article is about skincare items that have stayed on the market for over 20 years.  As you can imagine, the beauty industry is severely competitive and ever-changing.  Customers want newness, and chase the products with the latest buzz ingredient(s).

So credits to these products that have endured the test of (commercial) time.  I’ll limited the products to the 10 that have been around for more than 30 years, and list them in descending order:

1.  Shiseido Eudermine – 132 years

I’m somewhat ashamed to admit that I’ve not tried any of these cult products – and never even heard of Shiseido’s Eudermine!  But they are definitely on my list now, especially SK-II, La Mer and Sisley.  I’ve really loved researching for this piece though, especially this image I found on the package evolution of Shiseido Eudermine (BTW review from the amazeball Dempeux here):

Skincare that have endured the test of time: 10 items over 30 years old!

Other 20+ year old products include Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair (29 years),  Kose Medicated Sekkisei (26 years), Dior Capture Totale Multi-Perfection Concentrated Serum (25 years), Guerlain Aqua-Serum Optimum Hydration Revitalizer (24 years) and Chanel Precision Hydramax Active Serum (21 years).

Have you tried any of these classics?  I’d love to hear your thoughts on them!

SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream SPF36 PA+++

SkinFood is a Korean brand of skincare and makeup, and is the first cosmetic brand using food ingredients in their formulation.  SkinFood believes that all skin care needs – moisturising, nourishing, firming, and luminosity can be met with food, and they source all over the world for the best food ingredients.

I’ve heard good things about their BB Creams, so the awesome Jac of ChloeBlue Likes to Sparkle sent me this BB Cream which is too dark for her.

SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream SPF36 PA+++

I’ll be reviewing all BB Creams on the following criteria:

  1. Packaging
  2. Coverage
  3. Dry to touch finish
  4. Natural skin feel
  5. Fragrance
  6. Longevity

Packaging: 1/5

SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream SPF36 PA+++

The packaging is the dreaded sponge applicator – yuck!!!   Sponge applicators are so unhygienic and does not offer any convenience in application.  Jac already removed the sponge before sending it to me, which I’m thankful for as I get grossed out just looking at sponge applicators – imagine all the germs that can fester inside them!

Luckily the middle bit that house the sponge applicator can be removed as well, and you can squeeze the product through the nozzle.  Unfortunately still, the tube is quite hard, so you will need to use a bit of strength to squeeze out the product.  This gets harder as the product inside gets used, so I won’t be able to get all the BB Cream out of the tube.

Coverage: 5/5

SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream SPF36 PA+++

I LOVE the coverage of this BB Cream, a little goes a long way and is buildable for any blemishes or areas where you want more coverage.  Unlike a lot of BB Creams this does not sink into the lines – look how flawless my hand looks!

Dry-to-touch finish: 4.5/5

This BB Cream is really sticky, so you need to rub it into the skin for a nice finish.  Once rubbed in though, the majority of the stickiness goes away.  I use the tiniest bit of translucent powder to remove the last bit of sticky feeling on my face.

Natural skin feel: 4/5

When applying the SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream make sure you: (i) only use tiny amounts at a time, and (ii) really rub it in.  Due to its stickiness, if you don’t rub it in properly, you can easily pile on too much product and end up with the horrible “foundation mask” look.  It takes a while to get the hang of it, but once you do, you can get the perfectly flawless yet natural skin every girl dreams of!

The finish is dewy but not shiny, again it’s a little pink when first applied, but then adapts to your natural skin colour.

Fragrance: 5/5

Amazingly, the SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream not only has no sunscreen smell, it actually has a light botanical fragrance: my favourite!

Longevity: 4/5

Like its texture, this BB Cream sticks on my face nicely – staying put for 6 or so hours.  I’ve also noticed that even when my face does start to get oily, somehow it doesn’t look shiny (ie. still in the realms of dewiness).  It does wear off in patches though.

TOTAL SCORE: 23.5 OUT OF 30

It is such a shame that the SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream is packaged so terribly.  It gives great finish, looks flawless, smells great and did not break me out.  I think this product will suit all skin types too, so if you’re happy to deal with the awful packaging, it’s worth checking out.

SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream SPF36 PA+++ retails for US$18.70 and is available on Sasa.com.
