FOTD – Chinese New Year

Following my failure at Chinese New Year Mani, I thought I better try to redeem myself a little with a Chinese New Year FOTD.  This is the makeup I did for the reunion dinner on Chinese New Year eve – as it was a relatively casual affair (just me, my parents, Mr Ronan and his parents), I kept the look subdued with touches of gold, red and black.

 FOTD Chinese New Year

Face:

Since it was a very hot day in Melbourne, I was a bit more heavy-handed with the powder so my makeup holds up.

  • Face of Australia Stick Foundation Ivory
  • Lunasol Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral
  • Face of Australia Translucent Loose Powder

Brows:

  • Face of Australia Eye Definer Brown
  • Laura Mercier eyeshadows – Coffee GroundCafe Au Lait, and Fresco

Eyes:

Combination of gold, red and black – typical colours of Chinese New Year.

 FOTD Chinese New Year

  • GEO Circle Lenses Magic Black
  • Kanebo T’estimo eyeshadow No. 3 – I used the sparkly beige gold for the entire lids and under the lower lashlines, and including inner corners of the eyes
  • 88 Palette Eyeshadow - I used a matte red to accent the outer upper and lower lashlines.  Also used a black eyeshadow over the eyeliner to set it so it doesn’t run down my face as soon as I step outside into the heat
  • Solone Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil Black - I lined the inner upper lashlines most of the way, then took it up and extend towards the outer 1/3.  Did the same with the lower lashlines so the outer 1/3 is more visible.

Lips:

Another reason I kept the eyes simple is so that I can wear a bright red lippy – which is a must for Chinese New Year!

  • Face of Australia Lip Quench Lipstick Forbidden Fruit – applied with a lip brush

We went to Hutong Dumpling Bar and ate heaps!!  To be honest I reckon their dumplings are just okay, but I really love their Sichuan chilli dishes.  My favourite is their 夫妻肺片, which I won’t translate for the non-Chinese readers cos it would most likely sound extremely unappetising.  But I LOVE IT – one plate of this on a bowl of rice and I’m in heaven icon smile FOTD Chinese New Year

FOTD Chinese New YearNear the end of our dinner, a Dragon Dance crew came into the restaurant!  It was so much fun and we made a small contribution of red packet, as it was going to charity. Once we left the restaurant we stood outside and waited for the firecrackers to be lit, and more Dragon dance.  Mr Ronan’s mum absolutely loved it and recorded the whole thing on her Iphone – so cute of her!!! icon smile FOTD Chinese New Year

FOTD – Brown Smokey Eyes

The smokey eyes look is a classic party look, and is quite easy to do.  I like brown smokey eyes as it’s universally flattering, and more subtle so can take you from dinner to nightclub.

Clockwise from top left: 88-palette, Laura Mercier custom palette, Face of Australia Lip Quench SPF30+ Lipstick Iced Almond, Face of Australia Lasting Looks Foundation, Solone Magic Waterproof eye pencil black, Face of Australia Translucent Powder, Face of Australia Opulent Eyes

Face:

Full, natural coverage with the slightest peach blush – coral blush would work quite nicely too.

  • Face of Australia Lasting Looks Foundation Ivory
  • Face of Australia Translucent Loose Powder
  • Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Colour Rose Petal (the bottom right hand colour in the custom palette in above pic)
  • Laura Mercier Matte Eye Colour Fresco (top right hand colour in the custom palette) – contour sides of nose

Eyes:

The key here is to layer the colours from the lashline up to the socket line, using good quality eyeshadow brushes so they blend into each other.  Keep the brows a little lighter than usual, and fake lashes are a must!

 FOTD Brown Smokey Eyes

  1. Face of Australia Eye Primer Matte
  2. Solone Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil Black - draw a thick wing along the top lashline, extending into the inner and outer corners.  Fill in the inner top lashline as that adds to the intensity and make the lashes look thicker.  Also line the bottom lashline but leave the waterline bare
  3. Colour A (matte black) – with a small round eyeshadow brush layer this colour over the black eyeliner and blend 3mm outward
  4. Colour B (matte dark brown) – with a medium eyeshadow brush layer this colour over the black eyeshadow and blend outward and fill the entire socket
  5. Colour C (shimmer terracotta) – with a blending brush layer this colour over Colour B and extend just over the socket line.  Then use a small eyeliner brush to soften the lower eyeline with this colour
  6. Colour D (shimmer brown) – with a medium eyeshadow brush layer this colour onto the inner 1/3 of upper lid
  7. Colour E (satin white) – use an angled eyeline brush and fill in the waterline with this colour
  • Kiss Me Heroin Make Long & Curl Mascara – for top and bottom lashes
  • Face of Australia Eye Definer Brown - to fill in the brows
  • Fake Lashes Princess Lee No. 7 and Chanti No. 135 – layering a cris-cross lashes over a natural fluttering one creates multi-layered lashes that still look natural

Lips:

Lips are kept nude to contrast against the bold eyes.

  • Face of Australia Mechanical Lip Pencil Nude
  • Face of Australia Lip Quench Lipstick Iced Almond

Sultry and sophisticated – the smokey eye nude lips look will never go out of style.

FOTD – In the Mood For Love

I know I usually do my FOTD posts on Sundays but today is a very special day!

Today is the 2nd wedding anniversary of Mr Ronan and I, so we went to celebrate with a little romantic dinner (altogether now… awww) and this is a cute FOTD that I’ve whipped up for the occasion.

I used a combination of various purples as it’s the colour of romance.  For a touch of fun I drew on 2 little love hearts with a purple liquid eyeliner on each eyelid icon smile FOTD In the Mood For Love

Lashes are natural (ie. not thick) but long and fluttery.

  • Face of Australia Eye Primer Matte
  • 88-palette  - colour A applied all over lid and outer 1/2 of lower lashline, colour B on the inner 1/2 of upper lid and lower lashline, colour C on the outer corners of upper lashline.
  • Lunasol Vacation Ocean Eyeshadows Palette – colour D to blend the lid colours along the crease

  • Face of Australia Eye Primer Shimmer – to highlight the inner corners
  • Face of Australia Impact-Full Mascara Black
  • Princess Lee Lashes No. 7 Black

Lips:

Peachy and glossy, I did a subtle gradient lips with my fav lip combo currently.

We went to have a casual dinner at Cho Gao in Melbourne Central which we’ve been to a few times now.  Terrible, terrible service.  But the food is magnificent.

FOTD – Sparkling Smokey Eyes

This was the makeup look I wore to my friend’s engagement BBQ yesterday.  It was a pretty casual event, just friends and family from both sides at the future groom’s back yard.

Seeing I’ll be one of the bridesmaids, I forewent my usual weekend daggy getup (T-shirt & jeans, no makeup), and glammed up a bit.  Hey, I don’t want to be faced with shocked looks of “geez she looks DIFFERENT with makeup on” at the wedding OK? icon biggrin FOTD Sparkling Smokey Eyes

Face:

Being a casual day event and that it was such a glorious, sunny day yesterday, I wanted a luminous base that is still sweat and oil proof.  Don’t forget the sunscreen!

  • Nutox Oxyfusion Advanced Serum Concentrate
  • Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Mousse Water Base SPF 50+
  • Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator Angel Mist
  • 1028 Visual Therapy Naturally Fair Foundation
  • Lunasol Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral
  • Face of Australia Translucent Loose Powder
  • Face of Australia Blush Nutmeg - used as contours

Brows:

  • Face of Australia Eye Definer Brown
  • Laura Mercier eyeshadows – Coffee GroundCafe Au Lait, and Fresco

Eyes:

Keeping with the luminous base but glamming up as part of my bridesmaid duty, I wanted to create toned down a smokey eyes look that is sparkling.  In addition, as an engagement is about LOVE (awww), I used a peachy shade instead of the corporate-y browns/greys.

 FOTD Sparkling Smokey Eyes

  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator Angel Flame
  • 88 palette – a shimmery bronze on the outer half of my lids, a shimmery gold on the inner corners and bottom lashlines, and a dark brown on the outer bottom lashline (there was a bit of dark blue on the makeup brush left from previous use, but I kept it there cos I liked the extra bit of colour)
  • Solone Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil Black - to line the upper inner rims.  This gives definition to the eyes but no obvious lines when my eyes are closed.
  • Face of Australia Impact-Full Mascara Black – new formula to be launched 2012
  • Chanti Eyelashes No. 135 - 1 full pair cut into half for just the outer 1/2 of my eyes.  Daytime BBQ does not require full-on Barbie lashes!

Lips:

I would have liked a bit more colour and shine on my lips, say like a strawberry gloss. But as I usually put my lipcolour on at work, I am very limited to supplies at home.  Plus I was already running late by this stage so just grabbed the first things I saw.

  • Face of Australia Lip Quench Lipstick Lychee Crush
  • Face of Australia Divine Shine Lip Lacquer Morning Mist

This look would suit any daytime event, or a casual evening one.

FOTD – Gothic Ingenue

Today’s FOTD was based on the ingenue.  The ingenue is a character type that is a naive and wholesome young woman, with endearingly innocent eyes waiting to be rescued from the danger she often faces.

But a Google image search on ingenue was rather uninspiring; most images are of golden haired, green eyed girls with peaches and cream complexion.  Nothing wrong with that of course, but I was looking for something a bit darker.

That is until I came across 2 images: one of actress Mary Pickford who played a number of ingenue roles, and a doll created by twingling painted by Jme called Ingenue.  I liked the picture of Mary as she had a real harrowing look in her eyes, and the doll for its drama and colours.

FOTD Gothic IngenueBeing Halloween, and the fact that I am darked hair with a warm complexion, I’ve changed the colours to red/orange/golds, and amped up the quirkiness.

FOTD Gothic IngenueThe end result was a mix bag of ingenue, Lady Gaga, Gothic Lolita and Geisha.  Oh well, I hope you enjoy it anyway as I had fun doing this regardless icon razz FOTD Gothic Ingenue

Face

The face needs to be pale, flawless with a slight sheen so it looks porcelain like.

  • Hada Labo Arbutin Whitening Lotion
  • Cyber Colours Zero Pore Primer
  • Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator Angel Mist
  • 1028 Visual Therapy Naturally Fair Foundation
  • Face of Australia Stick Foundation Ivory
  • Face of Australia Translucent Loose Powder
  • Catwalk Blusher Gossip (pale candy pink)

Eyes

  • GEO Bambi Chocolate circle lenses
  • Face of Australia Eye Primer Matte
  • 88 Palette Eyeshadows

This type of FOTD is more suited to video format to clearly show the steps and techniques.  Seeing I’m nowhere near the stage of doing video tutorials, I’d keep the directions brief and show you the colours I used:

 FOTD Gothic Ingenue

Regardless of the colour combinations you use, the key is to create an exaggerated doe eye look, so leave a bit of the lower outer rim eye makeup free (ie. as if the whites of the eyes extend further down).

  1. Colour A (satin fuchsia) all over the lid extending over the natural brows and outer 1/3 of lower rim.
  2. Colour B (shimmer terracotta) in the middle of lids and middle of lower rims.
  3. Colour C (shimmer yellow gold) in the corners of upper and lower rims.
  4. Colour D (shimmer plum brown) to contour the edge of lids and nose.
  5. Colour E (matte red) for the outer edges of the lids and lower rims.
  6. Colours F (matte black), G (matte dark brown) blended together to further contoured the outer V of the eyes.
  7. Colour H (glitter antique gold) under the brows to give a distressed look
  • Face of Australia Liquid Eyeliner Black
  • Chanti Eyelashes No. 135 - I used 1 full pair, then cut another one in half and put the half one on the outer corners.
  • Ardell lashes 112 – for the lower lashes

Brows

Brows are thin, dark with a downward curve.

  • Solone Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil Black
  • 88 Palette Eyeshadow Black

Lips

To exaggerate the pout of the lips, only the middle is stained with a red that is the darkest on the very centre of lips.  This is then blended with a nude gloss to create gradient lips.

Alas as this is the very first time I’ve tried to do gradient lips, I failed rather miserably. Please refer to the picture of the Ingenue doll to see what it’s suppose to look like icon sad FOTD Gothic Ingenue

  • Face of Australia Stick Foundation Ivory - all over the lip
  • Face of Australia Lip Quench Lipstick Forbidden Fruit
  • Face of Australia Massage Therapy Lip Shine Daylesford

Think my mistake here was using the dark red before the nude gloss – I realised that as soon as I’d put the first smudge of red in the centre of the lips, but it was too late to go back…

I still have a lot to learn in the art of blending, but am still kinda happy with what I’ve produced!  If the opportunity and time permits, I’ll be sure to try my hand at it again.

 FOTD Gothic IngenueHappy Halloween!

My Holiday Haul!

My Holiday Haul - it's a big one!

Yes ladies here is my holiday haul, less a couple of items that I already started using.  I won’t bore you with description of each item – I’ll list some in groups:

Things that I was already using and stockpiled:

  • Nexcare acne dressing – these are DA BOMB.  I’ve been using them for about 5 years now and will always have them in my bathroom cupboard.  I’ve stockpiled 6 packets.
  • My Beauty Diary masks – as per my previous post I’m not sure if they’re the best sheet masks around, and I was hoping to try some other brands (especially White Formula ones as they were voted by FashionGuide as the best drugstore sheet masks).  But with the 2 pack special deal, haul request from my mum & Ponikuta, and the size of each pack – I ended up buying 4 packs of My Beauty Diary masks and no other sheet masks.
  • Kiss Me Heroine Make Long & Curl mascara – the best curling mascara ever.  I actually don’t love that it is so waterproof as it makes removing it such a pain, so I only bought one.
  • Princess Lee fake eyelashes – hand-woven, natural hair fake eyelashes made in Taiwan.  These are the best-selling fake eyelashes in Asia.

Things I’m most interested in trying:

  • Bird’s Nest skincare – all the rage in Malaysia.  I have My Beauty Diary sheet mask in Bird’s Nest and Nutox Oyfusion Advanced Serum Concentrate which contains Bird’s Nest essence.
  • HadaLabo Retinol Lifting & Firming Lotion – this must be brand new as I only saw it in Guardian Chemists Malaysia.
  • Kuan Yuan Lian Job’s Tear Powder mask and Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Revealing Mask – cos I can never have too many masks icon biggrin My Holiday Haul!

Things that were actually on my shopping list

  • Kai Chang’s new makeup toolkit book.
  • 88-Palette – from memory I bought this for RM$45 (AUD $15), hello bargain!
  • Lunasol eyeshadow palette – I chose this instead of UD Naked Palette after MUCH consideration.
  • Clinique Chubby Stick.
  • BB-Creams – I ended up purchasing Etude House and Dr.G ones.
  • Bow-shaped velcro hair holder.

Reviews will be posted as soon as I work my way through them (again here is where I wish I have more than one face) icon razz My Holiday Haul!
