Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GreenLine Makeup Brushes

I love good makeup brushes, I think they really make a difference in makeup application as they create a smoother, more professional finish.  However, whilst I have some makeup brushes in my kit, it’s not something I’ve really invested in.  I’ve always considered luxe makeup brushes to be the propriety of genuine makeup artists; I need to up my game in terms of makeup artistry before I can justify the cost.

There are of course, plenty of brushes in the middle price range.  But the array of them makes me dizzy: they all look so similar, I’ve no idea the difference between synthetic & genuine hair, and how will I know it doesn’t shed?

I received the Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GeenLine brush kit at the ABBW, and broke into it straight away (my bad for not blogging about it sooner icon razz Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GreenLine Makeup Brushes ).

Royal & Langnickel is a family owned and operated business based in the U.S., that has over 60 years of experience in brush-making.  They have extensive lines of art and makeup brushes, for the professionals and everyday consumers.  The S.I.L.K GeenLine brush kit is a part of their consumer lines in makeup brushes, and is eco-friendly.

The Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GeenLine brushes contain a blend of synthetic fibres, 100% bamboo handles with chrome plated nickel ferrules.  Packaged in a sustainable cork case, it includes 12 brushes.

Face & Brow brushes:

There are 4 brushes for the face – (Left to Right) Concealer, Blush, Foundation and Powder.

Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GreenLine Makeup Brushes

And one for the brows.

Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GreenLine Makeup Brushes

I use the powder and blush brushes the most.  I used to use foundation brushes a fair bit, but find using my fingers a more convenient and hygienic option.  Same with concealers: I find using my fingers I can better control the amount and how I dispense the concealer onto the necessary areas on my face.

Not surprisingly, I don’t use the eyebrow brush at all.  I don’t know why most eyebrow brushes seem to be made for people with massively thick eyebrows – I don’t need the metal or the wire brushes to brush out my non-existent  eyebrow hairs, nor the long stiff brush that will drag away the colours and the last remaining hairs on my brows >.<

Eye & Lip brushes:

My most used brushes.  There are 5 brushes for the eyes – (L to R) Smudger, Flat Liner, Eye Fluff, Eye Shaper (Bottom Right) Liner.  And 1 for the Lips (Bottom Left).

Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GreenLine Makeup Brushes

Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GreenLine Makeup Brushes

Eye shaper – I use this to deposit the main colour(s) on the eyelids.  The shape is perfect for covering the lids, but just the right size (about 1/3 of my eyelid) so you can still layer on 2-3 colour.

Flat Liner – I love this brush.  It’s so perfectly square and thin that I can swipe it across my eye pencil and apply the pigments onto the lashline.  I then dip it into a dark eyeshadow and apply that over the top of the pencil line to make it last longer.  It’s also great for creating the winged liner look evenly on both eyes – just make sure it’s at the same angle from the outer corners of the 2 eyes.

Smudger – Ok I don’t really know what this is for, as when it comes to eyeliner I don’t really like to smudge it out, but rather keep it a nice and defined.  I do use this for contouring my sockets and highlighting inner corners of the eyes.

Eye Fluff – My least favourite eye brush.  I think this is like a blending brush, to blend out the different colours on the eyelids, sockets and brow bone.  But I find the angle makes it difficult to manoeuvre, and the brush picks off a lot of the colours already on the eyes.  I prefer to use a bigger round brush to blend out my eyeshadows.

Liner – I don’t use this to line the top lashline as I prefer the Flat Liner or the Bobbie Brown Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush, to create slick, dark lines.  However I do use this for subtle lining of the lower lashline.

Lip – A fantastic lip brush.  It’s thin and stiff enough so I can use the edge to line my lips, but flexible enough to use the rest to fill in my lips.  Admittedly I don’t use lip brushes a lot, as I quite like the look of undefined nude lips (and I still wear nude lip colours more frequently).  But when I wear a bright colour, especially coral or deep red, I always apply it with this lip brush.

I’m no expert when it comes to makeup brushes, but I’ve really enjoyed using the Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GreenLine Makeup Brushes.  They’re soft (no prickliness on the face), deposit colours easily, and most importantly, have not shed even one hair.  It does struggle to deposit glitter onto the eyelid (the glitter ends up deep within the fibres), but I don’t use glitter eyeshadows much so it’s not overly problematic for me.

It’s a medium priced brush kit.  So if you’re a makeup intermediate like me, it’s a worthwhile purchase.  I’m particularly pleased that I actually do use majority of the brushes – which is difficult to find for me.  With this kit, I just need a smaller eyeshadow brush and a shorter but thicker eyeliner brush, and that’s all the brushes I need.

Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K GreenLine Makeup Brush kit retails for US$119.99 and is available on their website.

Thank you 2011

 Thank you 2011

Is it just me, or is every year going by quicker and quicker?  This year felt like it flew by, but I have to say, it’s been one of the most rewarding and enjoyable years I’ve had.  Here are my favourite and most memorable things from 2011:

1.  I began my career in Marketing

It was around Xmas last year when I made the transition from sales to marketing, and I couldn’t be happier.  I love my job and I’m so thankful for the amazing things I’ve been able to do because of it – and thank you for those who have supported the brand and the products I’ve launched into the market this year.

2.  I began blogging

Through my new job, I got to know the wonderful Beauty Bloggers around Australia, and some (you know who you are) gave me the kick up the proverbial to start my own beauty blog just over 6 months ago.

I have thoroughly enjoyed blogging: from doing 1-2 posts a week to now 3-4 (still sporadic I know), giving my blog the makeover it needed, braving FOTD, to trying my hand at things I’ve never done like nail art - I’ve learnt so much every step of the way. Thank you to my wonderful readers who have given me so much encouragement :’)

 Thank you 2011

3.  Attending the inaugural ABBW as both a blogger and PR

I was lucky enough to have been invited to attend ABBW as one of the bloggers even before I started blogging.  But I am so glad that I ended up blogging prior to the event, as it gave me so much more appreciation for all the events and topics of discussion.  As nerve-wrecking as it was, I also enjoyed representing my brand at the ABBW.  Thank you The Plastic Diaries and You’ve Got Nail for the invitation, and all the attending beauty bloggers for the help and support for the Masterclass.

4.  Being a part of a sorority (MBBE)

Where would I be without the wonderful #MBBE?  They are bunch of crazy talented, passionate gals who are caring and supportive of each other.  Every time we get together there would be loads of laughter, food and obsessive beauty talk.  Thank you for welcoming me into the group.

 Thank you 2011

5.  Discovering new products

Not so good for my wallet or tiny apartment, but I loved trying so many products that I would have never tried before!  I LOVE Clinique Chubby Sticks, solved my hair woes, and ventured into the world of OPI.  Thanks to my job and being a blogger – I now live and breath beauty every moment, everyday (Amen).

 Thank you 2011

All in all, I had a fabulous 2011.  So fabulous, that what I want to do in 2012 is MORE of what I’ve done this year – more blogging, and more beauty marketing!  I am a big believer that passion is key to happiness, and I want to keep that passion aflame by challenging myself to do better.

Beauty Insider: Blogger & Brand from both sides of the story

Beauty Insider: Blogger & Brand from both sides of the story

This is a topic I’ve been contemplating since ABBW 2011 but have been waiting for the right time to do it, partly because I wanted to get back to doing a few more beauty product posts before I jump into another event report/article style post and partly because I’m too lazy/disorganised to post on consecutive days icon razz Beauty Insider: Blogger & Brand from both sides of the story

However seeing the latest posts from Beautyholicsanonymous’ Bloggie Wednesday and You’ve Got Nail’s Open Mic have compelled me to write this today.

The topic of debate is on how bloggers interact with brands, and vice versa.  Should bloggers approach brands and if so, how?  Are the bloggers who work with brands sell-outs?  Are there right or wrong motivations on being a blogger? Can brands dictate when and what the bloggers write on their products?  What do brands actually think of bloggers?

I am a beauty blogger (albeit a newbie at it) AND I am the Brand Manager for a cosmetic company who deals with bloggers.  I am passionate about both and want to share my point of view on this debate, from both sides.

From a Blogger’s POV

Personally speaking, I really don’t care what someone’s motivation is in starting a beauty blog.  For passion?  Great.  For personal development?  Fantastic.  For money?  Good for you, just make sure you write a business plan and don’t quit your day job yet.  For events and freebies?  That’s fine, but be aware that some beauty/fashion events are quite dull and to me, the time and effort that goes in to putting together a good blog far outweigh the amount of goodies you’d receive.

The very wise Tine from Beautyholicsanonymous has said: “Content is King”, and I couldn’t agree more.

So why did I start blogging?

I love everything about beauty and love talking about it.  I have been a product junkie since my teens and have spent an obscene amount of money and hours of research on makeup, skincare and now cosmetic procedures.  One of my year 11 VCE articles was on Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids and my first assignment in my university Marketing course was on L’Oreal.  I also love to talk, and telling people what to do.  After years of preaching to a mostly disinterested audience, I discovered a crazy bunch of people that is the Melbourne Beauty Bloggers through my current job, who finally gave me the push that I needed to start my own beauty blog.

I need a creative outlet.  Fortunately or unfortunately, I’ve been born with a scientific brain.  In school, I excelled at all the subjects that the general population find boring: maths, physics, chemistry, economics and have drawn on those skills for a majority of my working life.  I still love all that: put a graph in front of me and I’ll happily disseminate and decipher it. But deep down I would have loved being an artist, and through running a beauty blog I get to do creative writing, photography, digital editing and crazy makeup looks.

I love marketing but am IT challenged.  I fell into Marketing after a failed attempt at completing the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, but am so thankful for it cos I freaking love Marketing!  When Social Media Marketing came about I was somewhat intimidated, because I’m such an idiot with technology I don’t even know how to use an Ipod.  So how do I choose to rectify that conundrum?  Why of course it’s to throw myself in the deep end, and become a blogger myself! icon biggrin Beauty Insider: Blogger & Brand from both sides of the story

BUT, regardless of the marketer side of me this blog is for myself.  Hence I have set myself some ground rules even before I started: I will only talk about my brand in the list of products I use rather than review them, and will not review products in a similar positioning (currently bridge price cosmetics available readily in Australia).  These are rules I will abide by for as long as I carry on being a blogger and beauty marketer.

From a Brand’s POV

This is my personal opinion and how I work, so PLEASE don’t take it as the industry standard or use this to preach to other brands/PRs.

Working with bloggers is a mutually beneficial relationship, especially for smaller brands.  As an avid blog reader (and I have been for many years) I’d like the blogs I read to be as well rounded as possible, covering all sorts of brands and products.  But the personal nature of blog means that if the blogger has to pay for all the products she reviews/uses on her blog it would most likely be limited to a handful of brands purely because let’s face it, we all only have one set of body/face/fingers.  So getting free samples from brands expose the blogger to a brand that may be out of her usual repertoire, but is interesting for her readers.  And for smaller brands like the one I work for currently, working with bloggers is the best way to drive trial where both distribution and $$$ for traditional advertising are limited.

But what about negative reviews?  I count myself lucky that I am a Brand Manager who is also in control of product development.  I have used every single item in my brand portfolio but to varying degrees as of course, there are products that suit me more and I will use those more frequently.  As much of a makeup junkie that I am, I have not used every single product in the marketplace and I have my own specific skin type/condition.  So I welcome any feedback as they are invaluable in making my brand the best that it possibly can be.  And I WOULD NEVER ASK YOU TO HAND OVER YOUR EDITORIAL CONTROL.  I do ask, that you express the negative opinion in a courteous and constructive manner.  Because it’s nice and because it’s nice to be nice. Plus it takes an enormous amount of money and effort to launch a product to the market so anything you have in your hand has been launched with a reason, be it the type of product, the packaging or the formula.  So bear in mind that just because some products do not work for you, it may not necessary mean that it would not work for your readers, and it’s important to express that.  There are products in my brand that don’t work for me that are winners in lots of people’s eyes.  And as a frequent user, there are plenty more cult products that break me out but are perfectly fine for others.

I don’t mind bloggers contacting me for samples.  Most of the bloggers I work with have been hand picked by me through research.  I try to know every beauty blogger in Australia but I am only one person so I can miss some.  For that reason (and the “only one face” rule) I am totally happy to receive emails from bloggers requesting samples. But again, please be nice when you do so.  Give me a tailored request that includes key info about your blog (with a link to it, for the love of God) and why you are interested in my brand.  I read every single request and when I do, I would spend time reading your blog, the comments you get, and look for you on Twitter.  So you need to show me that you have spent just as much time on writing to me; I can spot a Copy-and-Paste sample request from a mile away.

Who do I love more?  Bloggers or Magazine editors?  Honestly, I hate this debate. Going back to my analyst root, I see the marketing mix as a pie graph: there are more slices to it now but the pie remains in its entirety.  Social media marketing complements traditional marketing, either one will ever replace the other.  Sure, more people absorb information through the Internet now, but will TV, magazines, movies and billboards become extinct?  I don’t think so.  I simply don’t dedicate any energy in picking between the two sides but rather, do so to recognise the similarities and differences between the them.  I would not send press releases without product samples to magazine editors, and neither would I do that to bloggers; I would invite magazine editors to a lunch event, but would plan weekend/after-hour ones for bloggers unless I have given plenty of notice.

Follow Up.  This is the biggest disagreement I have to what was presented at ABBW 2011.  Probably because I am a Brand Manager who only looks after 3 brands and focuses mainly on one, and that my role crosses over to many other departments other than PR.  I know every single post on my brands that get posted within 48 hours because it’s my job to know.  It’s nice to get an email with a link to the post (because it’s nice to be nice icon biggrin Beauty Insider: Blogger & Brand from both sides of the story ), but for me not a necessity.  I do appreciate a tweet as it makes it easier for me to retweet, and does not add to my already unmanageable email inbox.  And as a personal plead don’t send me a thank you card – I know this sounds weird cos like I said, I think it’s nice to be nice, but if you have seen the state of my desk at work you would understand why I just can’t deal with any more incoming materials, no matter how nice it is (unless you’re sending me a Chanel bag, in which case feel free to do so).

No matter which side you’re on, the key for bloggers and brands is to treat each other with courtesy and respect.  You can be who you are but it’s just nice to be nice.

The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) – Chapter 2

At the night of Day 1, 85 BB’s slept soundly and deeply.  Bright and early the next morning, they opened their eyes and smiled with anticipation for the brand new day.

A delicious breakfast had been prepared by the lovely people of Alpha-H, who then introduced their Liquid Gold Skin Perfecting System.  The system is a three month skin booster program that promises to renew, re-energise and refresh the skin.

The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) – Chapter 2

After breakfast, one BB revealed her identity as the representative from Face of Australia cosmetics.  With the help and encouragement from her BB friends, she presented a makeup Masterclass along with makeup artist Kirsty Dolores.

The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) – Chapter 2

Her nerves were calmed by watching all the BB’s playing with all the makeup items, and talking about contouring and eyeliner techniques. The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) – Chapter 2 The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) – Chapter 2

Finally, Bahar Etminan of RESCU.com.au gave a keynote speech in an event sponsored by P&G Beauty and Grooming.  The BB’s listened intently to Bahar’s tips on running beauty blogs as businesses, and some debate of varying opinions pursued.  Despite the controversy, Bahar’s speech was a fascinating one and left the BB’s with plenty of food for thought.

The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) – Chapter 2

And so thanks to the fairy godmothers and 40 sponsors, the 85 BB’s lived the fairytale weekend that was ABBW 2011.  They took away with them an even greater love of blogging, an extra suitcase of gifts, and lots of new friendships.  It goes without saying that they lived happily ever after, knowing ABBW 2012 awaits them.

The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) – Chapter 1

Once upon a time, there were 85 little girls who were so obsessed with makeup they grew up to be beauty bloggers.  From all corners of Australia they would dedicate countless hours sitting at home swatching, doing makeovers, editing photos and writing, all to spread the word of beauty to the world.

As much as they loved blogging, the little girls felt lonely: they dreamt of meeting each other, and the brands that they have grown up loving and blogging about.

One day, two fairy godmothers, Jacie and Kimmi waved their magic wands and on September 24th, 85 talented young ladies were gathered in Sydney, for the inaugural Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW).

The young ladies were greeted with pressies from Dove, Australis, Le Tan, Innoxa and Garnier at registration.  There were also plenty of hugs and kisses, as the beauty bloggers meet face to face.

The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) Chapter 1

From there the BB’s (beauty bloggers) went on the magic carpet ride that is IMATS (International Makeup Artist Trade Show).  IMATS was filled with all kinds of coloured potions, accessories and expert speakers.  There were also mythical creatures to be seen (and judged)!

Royal Langnickel laid out the red carpet, and the BB’s were treated to a VIP retreat that had yummy treats, manicure and comfy couches to rest their tired (and well-heeled) feet.

Later that afternoon, the BB’s attended mad tea party held by Beauty Directory and brands such as La Purete, Trishave and The Purist Company.  They happily chatted with each other during the round table discussion, and asked the panel (Jackie Maxted from Beauty Directory, Eleanor Pendleton from InStyle and Kimmi from The Plastic Diaries) all sorts of questions.  The room was abuzz with passion – the BBs are one inspiring bunch of people!

The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) Chapter 1

In the evening, 85 BB’s turned into 85 princesses as they were whisked away to a gala dinner, hosted by Prince Charming AKA Maxted Thomas PR.

Pre-dinner, the BB’s were presented with many nobilities of the beauty world.  King Nivea offered complete head-to-toe skincare solutions, suncare, ingenious anti-stain deodorants and hours of entertainment with their photo booth.  Sultan Burts Bees bestowed personal care products that are natural, earth friendly and smell honey-licious.

Wizard Orly astounded with Gel FX manicure that gives superior shine, durability and even nourishes your nails (how awesome is that?).  Queen Coty delighted the sense of smell with an incredible collection of luxury perfumes.  Earl Sebastian Professional and Remington were on hand to primp the BB’s tresses into all kinds of gorgeousness.

Returning from the Mothership ABBW

I’m back from what I can only describe as a whirlwind weekend that is ABBW (recap here)!

There will be more posts to come, as I have learnt so much from the various media events, met so many wonderful beauty bloggers in person, and ran the Face of Australia Masterclass.  It really was a weekend to remember and I’m so thankful to be a part of it.

Those who read my blog often enough, would know that I’m somewhat of a sporadic blogger.  So, although so many beauty bloggers have been organised enough to post on ABBW already (how do you do it?), I can only give you a taster post today.

Thanks to the generosity of all the sponsors, us beauty bloggers were spoilt big time! Each and every attendees went away with a HUGE amounts of goodies to play with!

The problem, and I mean that in a good way of course (hubby may disagree, but whatevs), is that being the beauty addict that I already was, we now have a SERIOUS storage problem.  Exhibit A, B and C:

So I will share with you what I considered the most exciting item I saw at IMATS.  Oh geez it’s a beauty.  I would say it has been THE ONE that I have been searching for to complete my beauty obsession (by complete I do not mean end, just to clarify).

But alas, with the $1,250 price tag (which isn’t bad, to be honest, since it’s kinda like a piece of furniture) and consideration for my poor hubby, I just couldn’t take her home with me icon sad Returning from the Mothership ABBW

This gorgeous thing is from Beauty & Spa Solutions, who also stocks a wide range of fake eyelashes, Coastal Scents type eyeshadow palettes, professional makeup cases and supplies.

Here is a thought though: what if I had taken LOVER1.1 home, and find that it STILL does not fit all my beauty supplies???  I shall ponder that for the rest of tonight.

If you went to IMATS, what was the most exciting item you saw?

Beauty Bloggers are a pretty excitable bunch.  Case in point: Urban Decay Naked Palette – squee!  Clinique Chubby Stick – squeee!!  Tom Ford makeup collection – SQUEEEE!!!

But nothing, NOTHING compares to what is happening this month – the first ever Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW).

As we speak, 85 beauty bloggers Australia wide are quivering with sheer excitement at the arrival of the ABBW: 24th September – 25th September 2011.

The weekend is the brainchild of 2 amazing beauty bloggers: Jacie of YouveGotNail.com, and Kimmi of ThePlasticDiaries.com, and will be jam-packed full of amazing mixer events, workshops, speakers and endless amount of beauty talk!

Say what? SQUUEEEEEEEE!!!!!

The ABBW will of course include attendance of the International Makeup Artists Trade Show (IMATS).

The Mothership is here: Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW)

IMATS will host a variety of international beauty brands, including Make Up For Ever, Gorgeous Cosmetics, MAC, Kakuhodo to name a few.  I am also super excited for the speaker events, which includes Elessa Jade (of Pursebuzz.com), Rae Morris and Napoleon Perdis.

For me, the ABBW will be twice the excitement as I will be attending both as a beauty blogger and a sponsor icon smile The Mothership is here: Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) It also means twice the preparation so in true chaos fashion there are still quite a few things on my To-Do list:

  • Blogger business card – new logo 90% there so will be able to tick this off this week.
  • Killer frock – I always, ALWAYS leave clothes to the very last minute cos I hate shopping so much.  And am still hoping to shed a couple of kgs.
  • Hair – will book for a quick trim & do my roots next weekend.
  • Sponsored event – slowly pulling all the details together.  Reasonably on track.

Good news is I have all the accommodation, flights and function requirements booked. And Imma gonna totally own the dance floor White Chicks style (sorry Jacie).

Are you going to IMATS?  If you’re going as a part of ABBW – don’t forget to back me to win the dance-off! icon biggrin The Mothership is here: Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW)
