Etude House Sweet Recipe Baby Choux Base #02 Berry

Etude House is a Korean brand of cosmetics and skincare that never fails to catch my eye, with new launches that are so adorable in concept, packaging and advertising.  Their latest launch, Sweet Recipe Baby Choux Base is no exception – I knew I had to get my hands on one of these babies as soon as I saw the ad.

Etude House Sweet Recipe Baby Choux Base #02 Berry

Seriously, how cute is this?  Baby Choux Base is a makeup base that Etude House claims to “creates baby choux skin with its moist inside and soft smoothness on the outside.”

The box and the jar are as adorable as the name, and comes with a spatula which is fantastic – hygiene is important for both skincare and makeup products!

The product itself is a light and fluffy soufflé, I picked up #02 Berry Choux as it’s suitable for pale skin.

Berry Choux has a fruity strawberry scent, which is cute but a bit too strong and too sweet for my liking.  It’s apricot in colour that looks a bit white to start with, but blends quite nicely with the skin tone.

Etude House Sweet Recipe Baby Choux Base #02 Berry

On the face, it does a pretty good job of minimising the appearance of pores, and offers some coverage.  It leaves a velvet finish with a hint of glow.

However, this is where my praise for the Etude House Sweet Recipe Baby Choux Base ends.  Although the texture is light and fluffy in appearance, when I rubbed it in there is a very distinct granule feel – so much so it feels a little scratchy on the skin.

I also found this product to be unsuitable as a base for powder foundations – my go-to Lunasol powder foundation looks patchy, cakey, and exacerbates the bumpiness of the acne  (how I wish my face will clear up soon >.<).  And as my powder foundation has a yellow undertone, it blends with the apricot colour of the base and gives a very unbecoming orange tinge to my face.

Summary:

I’m not sure if I got a faulty jar but I really don’t like the Etude House Sweet Recipe Baby Choux Base.  The tiny powder granules feel scratchy on the skin, and doesn’t make a smooth base for powder foundations.  With some coverage, SPF 25 PA++ and a satin finish, I think it would be much better worn on its own, with a light dusting of translucent powder.  I would certainly do so when my face clears up, but for now, it’s into the storage drawer it goes.

Etude House Sweet Recipe Baby Choux Base retails for 11,000 Korean Won and is available in Etude House stores Asia-wide.  For non Asia residents please try reputable Ebay sellers.

Review: Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++

As you may be aware already, BB cream has been extremely popular in Asia for the past few years, and is starting to gain popularity in Australia.

In the strictest definition, BB stands for Blemish Balm, and designed as an all-in-one base product that provides coverage, sun protection and is good for the skin.  In terms of formulation it should be mineral based, and contains 80% skin-healing ingredients.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be reviewing one BB cream a week.  These are the criteria that I’ll be judging them on:

  1. Packaging
  2. Coverage
  3. Dry to touch finish
  4. Natural skin feel
  5. Fragrance
  6. Longevity

I purchased the Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream on a basis that I have a foundation by them that I loved.

Review: Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++Packaging: 2/5

I really love the concept of the packaging in that it’s a squeezable tube with an airless pump.  So there’s little wastage and is hygenic.

Review: Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++In reality, however, the pump does not offer any control – you either get 1 pump full or nothing, and is a bit ‘splattery’.  So the wastage comes from dispensing too much product, most of the time.

Coverage: 4/5

The formula is like a cream foundation and covers like one, and is buildable so it can be used as concealer too. (BTW pic below left is one pump – way too much!)

Review: Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++Dry-to-touch finish: 1/5

To me, a good BB cream should eliminate the regular sunscreen-foundation-concealer-powder routine.  So it should have a satin or dry-touch finish.  Not powdery or wet, just how the skin feels after appropriate level of cleansing.

Unfortunately this is where the Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream fails, it stays wet and sticky to the touch, so I have no choice but to set it with powder like I would a foundation.

Natural skin feel: 3/5

I like the natural dewy finish that this BB cream gives, even with a light sweep of translucent powder over it.  But again, as this BB cream behaves like a cream foundation – it just sits on top of my skin and I am aware that I am wearing foundation.

Fragrance: 4/5

I’m not overly picky when it comes to fragrance of cosmetics.  The main thing that I look out for with SPF products is that it doesn’t smell like sunscreen.  The Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream just has a regular foundation smell which I don’t mind.

Longevity: 3/5

Even though this is like a cream foundation, I found it to have fairly good longevity and does not wear off in patches.  Bear in mind though, I have extremely oily skin so most base products do not last more than 6 hours on my face.

TOTAL SCORE: 17 OUT OF 30

Unfortunately the Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream does not fare well – as a foundation it would be lovely, but as a BB cream it fails to deliver some very important benefits.

Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream SPF 30/PA+++ retails for about AUD$20 and is available in all Etude House flagship stores Asia-wide.  For non-Asia residents please try reputable Ebay sellers.

Skincare Trend Watch: Snail Cream

A new skincare craze has swept across Korea, now Japan and soon the rest of Asia and possibly the rest of the world will follow.  Mark my words: THIS IS HUGE.  The new miracle ingredient is, sit down and take a deep breath – snail slime.

 Skincare Trend Watch: Snail Cream

What the Snail?

What makes snail slime so special?  The simple explanation is that snail skin is made up of the same structural components of human skin such as collagen, elastin, water holding molecules, etc.  Since snail slime is what protects and restores the damages caused by sun radiation and the coarse surfaces they have to slither on, it can have the same regenerative effects on human skin too.

The scientific explanation is that snail slime contain glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) that tightly bind copper peptides.  Copper peptides not only degrades wounds and scars, but also has the ability to stimulate collagen production.  GAGs are a family of carbohydrates that play an important role in maintaining connective tissue between cells so the skin always looks more tight.  They also include the composition of hyalorunat, a compound that keeps the skin moist.

In short, snail slime has the ability to assist in breaking down acne scarring, promote collagen synthesis, and moisturise the skin.

History of Snail Cream

Snails were recommended for skin care as far back as 400 B.C when Hippocrates, considered the father of medicine, produced the earliest known snail cream with milk and crushed snails to treat skin redness.

In 1980, a Chilean family that sold snails to Europe for food purposes discovered that the handling of the snails softened the workers’ skin.  Another 15 years of scientific analysis and formulation later, the first modern snail cream was developed.

Snail cream increased in popularity in Koea in 2009, the trend reached its peak in 2010, and now it has spread to Japan and I believe the rest of Asia would follow suit.

So Which to Es-car-GET?

I got dizzy when I researched this – believe it or not there are just sooo many snail creams now! Below are the ones I read about the most:

1. Elicina Snail Cream 40ml - The original snail cream, containing 80% snail extract.

 Skincare Trend Watch: Snail Cream

 2.  Etude House Darling Cream 50ml - Contains 73% snail extract.

 Skincare Trend Watch: Snail Cream

3.  Elishacoy Skin Repair Snail Cream 50g – Contains 91% snail extract & Phyto-TP.

 Skincare Trend Watch: Snail Cream

4.  It’s Skin Cream D’escargot 60ml – Premium priced snail cream containing 20% snail extract.  70,000 units sold in its first month of launch.

 Skincare Trend Watch: Snail Cream

5.  Missha Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream 47ml – Contains 70% snail extract, botanical stem cell, Baobab Tree ingredient and Deep Sea Water Complex.

 Skincare Trend Watch: Snail Cream

6.  Tony Moly Intense Repair Live Snail Cream Set 45ml – Contains 70% snail extract and is available in cream/eye cream set.

 Skincare Trend Watch: Snail Cream

7.  Secret Key Snail + EGF Repairing Cream 50ml – Contains 75-80% snail extract and EGF.  Also available in clear gel version which is good for oily skin.

 Skincare Trend Watch: Snail Cream

This list does not even come close to scratching the surface of the hundreds of snail creams in the Korean market.  In addition within each brand mentioned there is an entire range of snail slime products – sheet mask, serum, eye cream, BB cream.

Whilst the thought of snail slime may be stomach-churning for some, it doesn’t really bother me.  I mean, we eat snails and the slime is incorporated into a cosmetic formulation, so it’s not like having live snails on your face.  Out of the 7 brands I will most likely give Elishacoy and Secret Key a try.

What about you?  Would you put snail cream on your face?
