FOTD – Have-It-All Evening Glamour

Getting the right balance between eyes, cheeks and lips is tricky.  The old rule of thumb in makeup, is that where you focus on one, you play down the others.

But greedy me want it all!  I love having smokey eyes, flushed cheeks AND vibrant lips.  So what to do?  Luckily, the BÉBÉ POSHÉ Sweet Doll Super Palette I purchased in Taiwan showed me the way.

FOTD Have It All Evening Glamour

I’ve worn this look to a wedding reception, and a night out on the town with the girls, and really like it!  It’s not too OTT, as the full-on smokey eyes and beige lips can be too harsh for evening events, and bright lips and nude eyes are a bit, too understated for my liking icon biggrin FOTD Have It All Evening Glamour

Face:

Of course, luminous skin is a must, and also needs to be budge-proof to withstand the hours of party time icon biggrin FOTD Have It All Evening Glamour .  For blush, I’ve really been loving BÉBÉ POSHÉ Sweet Doll Super Palette’s tip, in that you use a peach shimmer blush all over the cheek area, and a girlie pink on the apples.

  • BÉBÉ POSHÉ Sweet Doll Super Palette – colours A, B and highlighting stick (see details here)

Eyes:

Again I rely on the BÉBÉ POSHÉ Sweet Doll Super Palette for the just right smokey eyes.  I find the key to smokey eyes that don’t look intimidating, is to use pink on the inner corners, and terracotta along the socket line (I blend a bit of colour A of BÉBÉ POSHÉ Sweet Doll Super Palette into it).

Leave the brows until after the eyes are done, and go slowly when building up the colours on the eyes – put a bit on, look at your eyes in the mirror, then put more on as required.

I also use 2 pairs of eyelashes, as I find that to give the most natural yet dramatic look.

Lips:

The best thing I like about this look, is that it goes well from evening to night.  It doesn’t look too heavy in the early hours of the evening, but then the eyes take on a more smouldering effect into the night.  The result is sexy, yet elegant.

FOTD – Chinese New Year

Following my failure at Chinese New Year Mani, I thought I better try to redeem myself a little with a Chinese New Year FOTD.  This is the makeup I did for the reunion dinner on Chinese New Year eve – as it was a relatively casual affair (just me, my parents, Mr Ronan and his parents), I kept the look subdued with touches of gold, red and black.

Since it was a very hot day in Melbourne, I was a bit more heavy-handed with the powder so my makeup holds up.

Eyes:

Combination of gold, red and black – typical colours of Chinese New Year.

 FOTD Chinese New Year

  • GEO Circle Lenses Magic Black
  • Kanebo T’estimo eyeshadow No. 3 – I used the sparkly beige gold for the entire lids and under the lower lashlines, and including inner corners of the eyes
  • 88 Palette Eyeshadow - I used a matte red to accent the outer upper and lower lashlines.  Also used a black eyeshadow over the eyeliner to set it so it doesn’t run down my face as soon as I step outside into the heat
  • Solone Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil Black - I lined the inner upper lashlines most of the way, then took it up and extend towards the outer 1/3.  Did the same with the lower lashlines so the outer 1/3 is more visible.

Lips:

Another reason I kept the eyes simple is so that I can wear a bright red lippy – which is a must for Chinese New Year!

  • Face of Australia Lip Quench Lipstick Forbidden Fruit – applied with a lip brush

We went to Hutong Dumpling Bar and ate heaps!!  To be honest I reckon their dumplings are just okay, but I really love their Sichuan chilli dishes.  My favourite is their 夫妻肺片, which I won’t translate for the non-Chinese readers cos it would most likely sound extremely unappetising.  But I LOVE IT – one plate of this on a bowl of rice and I’m in heaven icon smile FOTD Chinese New Year

FOTD Chinese New YearNear the end of our dinner, a Dragon Dance crew came into the restaurant!  It was so much fun and we made a small contribution of red packet, as it was going to charity. Once we left the restaurant we stood outside and waited for the firecrackers to be lit, and more Dragon dance.  Mr Ronan’s mum absolutely loved it and recorded the whole thing on her Iphone – so cute of her!!! icon smile FOTD Chinese New Year

FOTD – Mermaid Inspired

Ah I love the beauty blogger community… just when I thought I’m stuck for FOTD ideas, out comes the fabulous launch of Makeup Utopia.  Makeup Utopia will be running fortnightly FOTD challenges – and here is the first theme: Mermaid Inspired.

My interpretation of the theme is how I envisage a mermaid would look like: an ethereal and mythical sea creature with subtle colours of the sea.  As a child, I used to love playing mermaid (by wrapping a blanket around my legs, of course icon smile FOTD Mermaid Inspired ), and this is a perfect opportunity to re-live that fantasy.

Face:

The skin is dewy, luminous with shell-like lustre.  The cheeks are flushed coral, like a mild sunburn – which the mermaid got as she spends hours with her head above the ocean, peering at the beautiful prince.

  • Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator Angel Mist – applied all over the face/eyes/lips as base
  • 1028 Visual Therapy Naturally Fair Foundation
  • Lunasol Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral - patted across the apples of the cheeks, and a little across the nose

Eyes:

As my interpretation is how a mermaid would actually look like, the eyes are kept really light with no use of pencils.  The idea is that they are tinted by the sea grasses, golden sand and white sea foams, as the mermaid swims past them everyday.

  • GEO Bambi Princess Mimi circle lenses Apple Green
  • Lunasol Vacation Ocean Eyeshadows Palette – peach colour on the very inner lid, sheer aqua green all over the lid and under eye, and a little of the dark blue along the outer upper lashline
  • Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator Angel Glow - applied lightly under the inner and outer ends of the brows
  • Kanebo T’estimo eyeshadow No. 3 - gold applied over the brows and blended into the aqua green
  • Face of Australia Mini Mousse Snow White - dotted along the temple and upper cheek, and the inner corners of the eyes
  • Face of Australia Impact-Curl Mascara Black – just 1 coat over the top and bottom lashes.

Lips:

The lips are tinted coral and naturally moist, not glossy or shimmery.

  • Lunasol Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral - applied all over the lips
  • Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Colour True Coral - patted onto the middle of the lips for a subtle gradient
  • Face of Australia Massage Therapy Lip Shine Noosa - applied very thinly over the lips

I found the best ‘tool’ for this look, is to pat the colours on with the fingers.  That way the colours look sheer, and not too precise.  Hope you like this look, and look forward to see other entries in Makeup Utopia’s FOTD Challenge 1!

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and got lots of nice pressies!  Mr Ronan and I celebrated Christmas eve with my family, and actual Christmas Day with his – so we’ve been eating and drinking for 2 days in a row icon razz GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

As Mr Ronan has quite a big family, for the last few years the adults take part in Kris Kringle – which I totally love cos it saves shopping time, and everyone gets to pick exactly what he/she wants.

This year I asked for some Circle Lenses.  In case you don’t know, Circle Lenses are colour contact lenses that are bigger than the normal iris.  Why bigger?  It’s to give you cute doe-eyes.  And when teamed with false eyelashes, you get the killer combo: doll-like eyes that are sparkly and innocent icon smile GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

I got 3 colours from the GEO Bambi series – Green Apple, Sesame Grey and Chocolate.

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

  • Manufacturer: Geo Medical
  • Life Span: 1 Year Disposable
  • BC: 8.6 mm
  • Diameter: 15.00 mm
  • Water content: 38%
  • Power range: 0.00 to -8.00

Green Apple:

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle LensesI was hesitant in getting this colour as I was worried it would look too “out there” and alien-like.  But I love them!!  The green shows up quite natural and really pretty on dark eyes.

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

I teamed these lenses with green eyeshadows and raspberry lips on Christmas Day, and thought it looked rather fabulous icon biggrin GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

Sesame Grey:

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

These were not from KK – I actually purchased these a while ago.  I have to say I don’t really like these – you can see that it has specks of light grey and gold which make them reflect blue/green especially in flash photography.

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

So rather than looking sparkly eyed, it makes you look startled.  This is a common problem with grey circle lenses though – I’m still to find a pair that does not do the same thing.

Chocolate:

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

I love these – the combination of dark, reddish and gold browns make the eyes an adorable caramel colour.  And it looks really natural.

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle LensesI find the GEO Bambi series to be really comfortable and fits well on the eyeballs.  They make getting “dolled-up” so much easier, as you can just chuck on these, some fake eyelashes and a little eyeliner and you’re done!  If you’ve never tried them before I highly recommend you do – they are so much fun to play with!

And still on the subject of Christmas pressies… I got another great one to show off and that is the foldable light box from Mr Ronan!  It’s great cos now I can take product shots on the balcony, and after I’m done I can just fold it and put it away.  LOVE IT!!!

GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

GEO Bambi series retail for $32.95 a pair and can be purchased on www.circlelens.com.au (they have heaps of other circle lenses too)

P.S.  Sorry for the crappy tear duct highlight that look like sparkly eye goop.  I’m still recovering from the Christmas festivities so couldn’t be bothered fixing it icon razz GEO Bambi Princess Mimi Colour Circle Lenses

FOTD – Gothic Ingenue

Today’s FOTD was based on the ingenue.  The ingenue is a character type that is a naive and wholesome young woman, with endearingly innocent eyes waiting to be rescued from the danger she often faces.

But a Google image search on ingenue was rather uninspiring; most images are of golden haired, green eyed girls with peaches and cream complexion.  Nothing wrong with that of course, but I was looking for something a bit darker.

That is until I came across 2 images: one of actress Mary Pickford who played a number of ingenue roles, and a doll created by twingling painted by Jme called Ingenue.  I liked the picture of Mary as she had a real harrowing look in her eyes, and the doll for its drama and colours.

FOTD Gothic IngenueBeing Halloween, and the fact that I am darked hair with a warm complexion, I’ve changed the colours to red/orange/golds, and amped up the quirkiness.

FOTD Gothic IngenueThe end result was a mix bag of ingenue, Lady Gaga, Gothic Lolita and Geisha.  Oh well, I hope you enjoy it anyway as I had fun doing this regardless icon razz FOTD Gothic Ingenue

Face

  • 88 Palette Eyeshadows

This type of FOTD is more suited to video format to clearly show the steps and techniques.  Seeing I’m nowhere near the stage of doing video tutorials, I’d keep the directions brief and show you the colours I used:

 FOTD Gothic Ingenue

Regardless of the colour combinations you use, the key is to create an exaggerated doe eye look, so leave a bit of the lower outer rim eye makeup free (ie. as if the whites of the eyes extend further down).

  1. Colour A (satin fuchsia) all over the lid extending over the natural brows and outer 1/3 of lower rim.
  2. Colour B (shimmer terracotta) in the middle of lids and middle of lower rims.
  3. Colour C (shimmer yellow gold) in the corners of upper and lower rims.
  4. Colour D (shimmer plum brown) to contour the edge of lids and nose.
  5. Colour E (matte red) for the outer edges of the lids and lower rims.
  6. Colours F (matte black), G (matte dark brown) blended together to further contoured the outer V of the eyes.
  7. Colour H (glitter antique gold) under the brows to give a distressed look
  • Face of Australia Liquid Eyeliner Black
  • Chanti Eyelashes No. 135 - I used 1 full pair, then cut another one in half and put the half one on the outer corners.
  • Ardell lashes 112 – for the lower lashes

Brows

Brows are thin, dark with a downward curve.

  • Solone Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil Black
  • 88 Palette Eyeshadow Black

Lips

To exaggerate the pout of the lips, only the middle is stained with a red that is the darkest on the very centre of lips.  This is then blended with a nude gloss to create gradient lips.

Alas as this is the very first time I’ve tried to do gradient lips, I failed rather miserably. Please refer to the picture of the Ingenue doll to see what it’s suppose to look like icon sad FOTD Gothic Ingenue

  • Face of Australia Stick Foundation Ivory - all over the lip
  • Face of Australia Lip Quench Lipstick Forbidden Fruit
  • Face of Australia Massage Therapy Lip Shine Daylesford

Think my mistake here was using the dark red before the nude gloss – I realised that as soon as I’d put the first smudge of red in the centre of the lips, but it was too late to go back…

I still have a lot to learn in the art of blending, but am still kinda happy with what I’ve produced!  If the opportunity and time permits, I’ll be sure to try my hand at it again.

 FOTD Gothic IngenueHappy Halloween!

FOTD – Springtime lunch with the girls

Spring is finally here!  Ok, I know we’re half way into Spring already, but finally we have a weekend that is actually not gloomy.  So I’m off to lunch with 4 of my high school gal pals and our partners today icon smile FOTD Springtime lunch with the girls

I always like to go a little OTT with my makeup when I lunch with the girls, since they appreciate makeup and don’t say things like “hmmm…. crazy eyes” (which happened when I wore rainbow colour eye makeup to work once, in my defence I did so on casual Friday).

This weekend’s weather conjured up yummy, citrus-y colours.  Being a casual Sunday lunch this look is soft, and really quick to do.

FOTD – Doll Eyes

I know my last FOTD post was on monolids (see here), but seeing Lancôme’s latest campaign on their new Hypnôse Doll Eyes mascara has me inspired in another direction. And hey, isn’t part of the allure in makeup the ability to transform oneself?

Before you ask the question – I do have true monolids.  But the process of ageing has made my eyelids more saggy, so now I find strip eyelashes to have the ability to prop my eyelids up and create the creases of open double lids.
