Kanebo Kate Wide Edge Eyes BR1

In my last post, I blogged about my dismay of the newly launched Kanebo Kate Real Create Eyes Palette.  But be assured that this brand does have plenty to offer.  I picked up one of the Wide Edge Eyes eyeshadow palettes, which were released Autumn 2011.

Kanebo Kate Wide Edge Eyes BR1There are 5 variants in this range as well.  And as I’m researching for an upcoming product launch, I again picked up the brown/neutral one, BR1:

Kanebo Kate Wide Edge Eyes BR1

Kanebo Kate Wide Edge Eyes BR1

Like the Real Create Eyes Palette, the instructions are on the acetate box ARRRGH!  I’ve really enjoyed following the instructions that come with the Asian eyeshadow palettes – they’ve definitely given me some different takes on how I normally apply eyeshadows, so I’d like to hang onto them.  Here they are for our reference icon biggrin Kanebo Kate Wide Edge Eyes BR1

Kanebo Kate Wide Edge Eyes BR1

This palette is designed to give wider, longer eyes by using the lighter shades in the inner corners of the eyes, then gradating to darker hues on the outer edges.  The dramatic Japanese dude is back with an instructional video on this palette too LOL

The good thing is with this palette, is that even thought the pigments are sheer, they have good pay-off and vary in texture.  The base colour is matte, and the rest go from shimmer to satin.  The gold/terracotta tinge also picks up the complexion, and makes the neutral eyes alluring.

Kanebo Kate Wide Edge Eyes BR1

I adore this palette – and think it suits makeup novices and seasoned wearers equally.  Due to its sheerness I do recommend that you use a good eye primer (eg. Urban Decay Primer Potion) to keep the colours in place.

Kate Wide Edge Eyes retail for NT$400 (about AUD$13) and is available from Watson and Cosmed.  For non-Taiwan residents please try reputable Ebay sellers.

Kanebo Kate Real Create Eyes BR1

Kate is the budget cosmetic offering from Japanese beauty giant Kanebo.  Like its sister brands, Lunasol and Coffret D’or, Kate is quite well known for its eyeshadow palettes.  But the great thing is, being a budget brand – its significantly cheaper than Lunasol and Coffret D’or.  So of course I had to haul a couple of them whilst in Taiwan!

Real Create Eyes Palette is Kate’s latest launch:

Kanebo Kate Real Create Eyes BR1

There are 5 variants in total – I picked up BR1 which is one of the brown palettes.

Kanebo Kate Real Create Eyes BR1

As a launch special in Taiwan, all Kate Real Create Eyes come with a sachet of Kate BB gel cream – which I’ll be trying for sure since I’m mad for BB’s.

What’s different with the Real Create Eyes Palette, is that the top left colour is actually a shimmer soft cream that acts as a base and a highlighter.

The instructions are annoyingly on the back of the acetate box that the palette is contained in.  So once you throw out the box, there is no instructions anywhere!  But anyhow here they are:

Kanebo Kate Real Create Eyes BR1

The idea is that using the different textures together will give “deeply contoured eyes” (as quoted by the Kanebo Kate global website).  I also found a good instructional video clip – though I don’t know why they’ve used such dramatic male voice-over icon biggrin Kanebo Kate Real Create Eyes BR1

All the colours are quite sheer – I find that to be a common characteristic amongst many Japanese eyeshadows.  They are nevertheless good for creating very neutral and soft look.  The eyeshadows are easily spreadable, and the colours look really pretty together.

Kanebo Kate Real Create Eyes BR1

BUT, and it’s a big BUT – the glow jelly is way too gooey!  I had hoped perhaps it would perform some sort of magic when combined with the powders, and become a budge-proof wash of shimmer over my lids.  Sadly it’s not the case, as it makes the eyeshadows more easily smudged (something my already oily lids don’t need), and the stickiness of it really bothered me during application.

Needless to say, I’m a bit disappointed with Kate’s latest launch.  I like the concept of including a cream shimmer base in a palette, and thought it would be better than their existing palettes (hence the purchase, even though I had doubts when swatching it in store).

If you don’t suffer from smudgy eye makeup usually, this would probably be okay.  But if so, then I suggest Kate’s other eyeshadow palettes.

FOTD – Chinese New Year

Following my failure at Chinese New Year Mani, I thought I better try to redeem myself a little with a Chinese New Year FOTD.  This is the makeup I did for the reunion dinner on Chinese New Year eve – as it was a relatively casual affair (just me, my parents, Mr Ronan and his parents), I kept the look subdued with touches of gold, red and black.

 FOTD Chinese New Year

Face:

Since it was a very hot day in Melbourne, I was a bit more heavy-handed with the powder so my makeup holds up.

  • Face of Australia Stick Foundation Ivory
  • Lunasol Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral
  • Face of Australia Translucent Loose Powder

Brows:

  • Face of Australia Eye Definer Brown
  • Laura Mercier eyeshadows – Coffee GroundCafe Au Lait, and Fresco

Eyes:

Combination of gold, red and black – typical colours of Chinese New Year.

 FOTD Chinese New Year

  • GEO Circle Lenses Magic Black
  • Kanebo T’estimo eyeshadow No. 3 – I used the sparkly beige gold for the entire lids and under the lower lashlines, and including inner corners of the eyes
  • 88 Palette Eyeshadow - I used a matte red to accent the outer upper and lower lashlines.  Also used a black eyeshadow over the eyeliner to set it so it doesn’t run down my face as soon as I step outside into the heat
  • Solone Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil Black - I lined the inner upper lashlines most of the way, then took it up and extend towards the outer 1/3.  Did the same with the lower lashlines so the outer 1/3 is more visible.

Lips:

Another reason I kept the eyes simple is so that I can wear a bright red lippy – which is a must for Chinese New Year!

  • Face of Australia Lip Quench Lipstick Forbidden Fruit – applied with a lip brush

We went to Hutong Dumpling Bar and ate heaps!!  To be honest I reckon their dumplings are just okay, but I really love their Sichuan chilli dishes.  My favourite is their 夫妻肺片, which I won’t translate for the non-Chinese readers cos it would most likely sound extremely unappetising.  But I LOVE IT – one plate of this on a bowl of rice and I’m in heaven icon smile FOTD Chinese New Year

FOTD Chinese New YearNear the end of our dinner, a Dragon Dance crew came into the restaurant!  It was so much fun and we made a small contribution of red packet, as it was going to charity. Once we left the restaurant we stood outside and waited for the firecrackers to be lit, and more Dragon dance.  Mr Ronan’s mum absolutely loved it and recorded the whole thing on her Iphone – so cute of her!!! icon smile FOTD Chinese New Year

FOTD – Mermaid Inspired

Ah I love the beauty blogger community… just when I thought I’m stuck for FOTD ideas, out comes the fabulous launch of Makeup Utopia.  Makeup Utopia will be running fortnightly FOTD challenges – and here is the first theme: Mermaid Inspired.

My interpretation of the theme is how I envisage a mermaid would look like: an ethereal and mythical sea creature with subtle colours of the sea.  As a child, I used to love playing mermaid (by wrapping a blanket around my legs, of course icon smile FOTD Mermaid Inspired ), and this is a perfect opportunity to re-live that fantasy.

Face:

The skin is dewy, luminous with shell-like lustre.  The cheeks are flushed coral, like a mild sunburn – which the mermaid got as she spends hours with her head above the ocean, peering at the beautiful prince.

  • Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator Angel Mist – applied all over the face/eyes/lips as base
  • 1028 Visual Therapy Naturally Fair Foundation
  • Lunasol Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral - patted across the apples of the cheeks, and a little across the nose

Eyes:

As my interpretation is how a mermaid would actually look like, the eyes are kept really light with no use of pencils.  The idea is that they are tinted by the sea grasses, golden sand and white sea foams, as the mermaid swims past them everyday.

 FOTD Mermaid Inspired

  • GEO Bambi Princess Mimi circle lenses Apple Green
  • Lunasol Vacation Ocean Eyeshadows Palette – peach colour on the very inner lid, sheer aqua green all over the lid and under eye, and a little of the dark blue along the outer upper lashline
  • Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator Angel Glow - applied lightly under the inner and outer ends of the brows
  • Kanebo T’estimo eyeshadow No. 3 - gold applied over the brows and blended into the aqua green
  • Face of Australia Mini Mousse Snow White - dotted along the temple and upper cheek, and the inner corners of the eyes
  • Face of Australia Impact-Curl Mascara Black – just 1 coat over the top and bottom lashes.

Lips:

The lips are tinted coral and naturally moist, not glossy or shimmery.

  • Lunasol Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral - applied all over the lips
  • Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Colour True Coral - patted onto the middle of the lips for a subtle gradient
  • Face of Australia Massage Therapy Lip Shine Noosa - applied very thinly over the lips

I found the best ‘tool’ for this look, is to pat the colours on with the fingers.  That way the colours look sheer, and not too precise.  Hope you like this look, and look forward to see other entries in Makeup Utopia’s FOTD Challenge 1!

FOTD – Shanghai Nights

This FOTD was inspired by one of the looks in the latest issue of Taiwanese beauty magazine, Queen 女人我最大 (post here).  But it’s a look I have always wanted to try – vintage orient inspired by the Old Shanghai.

Decadence in Shanghai was at its height in 1920s and 30s.  Known as the “Paris of Asia,” 19th-century Shanghai boasted fine restaurants, exquisite craft shops, back street opium dens, gambling parlors, smoky jazz clubs and brothels.  Night-life at the Shanghai cabaret was a delicious fusion of western Jazz bands with Chinese songstresses, and elegant women in the finest silk cheongsam.

Makeup in that era was very much influenced by Hollywood, but with the use of deep reds that look so exotic against the meticulously coiffed dark hair.

FOTD – Springtime lunch with the girls

Spring is finally here!  Ok, I know we’re half way into Spring already, but finally we have a weekend that is actually not gloomy.  So I’m off to lunch with 4 of my high school gal pals and our partners today icon smile FOTD Springtime lunch with the girls

I always like to go a little OTT with my makeup when I lunch with the girls, since they appreciate makeup and don’t say things like “hmmm…. crazy eyes” (which happened when I wore rainbow colour eye makeup to work once, in my defence I did so on casual Friday).

This weekend’s weather conjured up yummy, citrus-y colours.  Being a casual Sunday lunch this look is soft, and really quick to do.

Review: Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral

This Lunasol blush is from the same limited edition as the Vacation Ocean Eyeshadow Palette (reviewed here), and is available in 3 shades: EX01 light pink, EX02 light beige and EX03 light coral.

I actually purchased EX03 light coral a little unwillingly, as I was more interested in EX01 light pink which unfortunately was sold out.  But I didn’t have a cream blush in my makeup collection and was keen to try more than just the eyeshadow from Lunasol.

Review: Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral

And I’m so glad I did!  This shade is incredibly versatile: teamed with dramatic smokey eyes it adds a touch of prettiness (see my Pink & Black FOTD), but teamed with simple neutral eyes it gives elegance and amps up the sexiness.  This can be accredited to the formula as well:

  • Smooth liquid form that is easy to blend
  • Sets to a satin finish
  • Doesn’t set too quickly so it’s easy to work with to get the desired intensity
  • Buildable colour

To use, just squeeze out half a pea size onto the middle finger (see above picture), this is enough for both cheeks.

Apply the blush onto the cheeks after foundation/concealer but before powder (1st pic from left below).  This is important as liquids blend best with each other; using this over powder will push the powder around and give a patchy finish.

Review: Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition Cream Cheeks EX03 Light Coral

Then with a powder brush, gently pat a thin layer of translucent powder all over the face.  Be careful not to move the blush colour off the apples of the cheeks but blend away the edges, to give a natural flushed look (middle pic above).

I like a little more colour on the apples so I take tiny bits of the blush (half a rice grain size at a time) and tap it on where it’s needed.  The beauty with this liquid to satin format is that, even though it is put on top of powder, as long as you’re careful it will still blend nicely (last pic on right above).

Kanebo Lunasol Cream Cheeks is about USD$40 but given that it’s a 12g tube and only a tiny bit is required, it’s great value for money.  It can also be used as a sheer lip colour – just top with a clear gloss and you’re summer!

FOTD – Celebrating Monolids

If you were born with monolids, like me, you probably have spent most of your life wishing for double eyelids.  In case you don’t know, monolid is where the upper eyelid does not have a crease.  Double eyelids are desired by most Asians and as a result Asian blepharoplasty (eye surgery to create the crease) is the most common procedure in Asia.

Lately, however, I am starting to embrace my monolids.  What brought this change of heart?  It’s all to do with Estee Lauder’s new face: Liu Wen, and I find her absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.

 FOTD Celebrating Monolids

So inspired I did a FOTD: no eyelid tape (not that I know how to use them), no strip eyelashes to “prop” my lids up to create the crease, not even contouring to create the illusion of deeper eye sockets.

 FOTD Celebrating Monolids

The key to this look is to elongate and accentuate the outer corners of the eyes.  The liner is thin on the inner 2/3 of the lashline (so the eyes don’t look rounded), and extended in the downward direction towards the outer 1/3.  Fake eyelashes also only applied on the outer 1/3 and in a slight downward direction.

Face

Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition – EX02 Vacation Ocean Eyeshadow Palette

This is the eyeshadow palette that I chose over Urban Decay’s Naked Palette.  Yes you heard (or rather… read) right ladies; I came face-to-face with the much celebrated Naked Palette, swatched it, then decided against it.  Now before you discredit me as a beauty blogger and unsubscribe my blog (and if you haven’t subscribed, please do, I really do have interesting things to say icon biggrin Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition EX02 Vacation Ocean Eyeshadow Palette ), I must explain what lead to my decision…

1.  I have way too many browns/neutral eyeshadows – having worked for cosmetic companies for 2/3 of my career I have accumulated brown eyeshadows in almost every hue and texture imaginable.  I also allowed myself to splurged on a very expensive Laura Mercier custom compact filled with matte browns/neutrals for my wedding, since I was doing my own makeup (my “Save & Spend” philosophy).

2.  I have always wanted a Lunasol eyeshadow palette.  I have purchased Kanebo Coffret D’or eyeshadow palettes and loved them.  Lunasol is Kanebo’s premium makeup brand so I have been lusting after their eyeshadows season after season yet couldn’t bring myself to pay the premium price tag for them.  But with the money I saved for foregoing the Naked Palette, I figured I was justified in purchasing it on my trip (again my “Save & Spend” philosophy comes to play).

I purchased one of Lunasol’s Summer 2011 Limited Edition eyeshadow palettes in EX02 Vacation Ocean.

Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition EX02 Vacation Ocean Eyeshadow Palette

The packaging is sleek and simple, but a little lacking in appeal and sturdiness for what I’d expect from a premium brand.

Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition EX02 Vacation Ocean Eyeshadow Palette

Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition EX02 Vacation Ocean Eyeshadow Palette

But inside, holds the key as to why I chose this palette – the shades are just so pretty!!!

Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition EX02 Vacation Ocean Eyeshadow Palette

A close up of the eyeshadows – the shade that I was the most drawn to is the dark blue.

I’ve always like blue eyeshadows but all the ones I have seem to make my complexion looked tanned (a big no no for me).  According to the Lunasol salesgirl as this blue is a richer golden blue, it won’t make my skin look yellow like a true cool blue.

Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition EX02 Vacation Ocean Eyeshadow Palette

Swatches of the eyeshadows on my arm – which in turn erased the pretty pink letters on the palette *sob*

The eyeshadows appear quite glittery when swatched on my arm, but when I used my regular makeup brush to apply them onto my eyelids, the pigments felt rich, creamy, with the same colour and amount of shimmer to make the colours easily blendable with each other.  Unfortunately I’ll have to leave the FOTD post for another day, as the gloomy Melbourne weather rendered all my face shots unusable icon sad Kanebo Lunasol Summer 2011 Limited Edition EX02 Vacation Ocean Eyeshadow Palette

I’m a little disappointed with the quality of the applicators though – the sponge tips are not dense enough to pick up any of the pigments.  I know this is quite common in eyeshadow palettes but my Coffret D’or palettes actually came with pretty decent applicators so I was expecting more from Lunasol.

All in all, the Lunasol eyeshadow palette is quite a beauty.  However would I purchase another one? Probably not.  At about AUD $70 a Lunasol eyeshadow palette is almost double the price of a Coffret D’or one, but I don’t believe there is enough difference in the quality to justify the price hike.
