Shu Uemura cleansing oils need no introduction: they’re amongst of the best sellers within the brand and probably the best selling cleansing oils in the world. It is claimed that 1 bottle is sold every 7 seconds, which is not all that surprising, as Shu Uemura continues to promote this franchise with new variants and limited edition designs.
I picked up the pink variant when the Mamechiyo designs were out 6 months ago. I know, I know… I’m way late in blogging about it. But hey, better late than never, and the pink variant is still available in its regular packaging
What they say:
A lightweight cleansing oil that leaves the skin clean, fresh and refined.
Wash away pore concerns-enlarged pores and clogged pores that lead to blackheads with our innovative natural origin system for superb cleansing. Effectively remove make-up and impurities inside pores while maintaining the skin’s necessary moisture level. Empowered with sakura complex, this cleansing oil minimizes pores by eliminating excess sebum and visibly smoothes the skin’s surface.

My experience:
The packaging is a simple plastic tinted bottle with white pump. Convenient, hygienic and mess free for at-home use. I do love the Mamechiyo design of blossoms and butterflies, as it adds that touch of luxury that I would want when shelling out the extra dough for a prestige brand such as Shu Uemura.
The cleansing oil itself is a clear oil. To use, I dispense about 2 pumps of it into the palm of my hands then distribute onto my face, then use a bit of water to emulsify the oil and wash it off.
The Shu Uemura Fresh Pore Clarifying Gentle Cleansing Oil does a great job at removing all makeup – you can see in above pics that it can effectively remove my eye and brow makeup. I still avoid applying it too close to the lashlines though, as whilst the oil itself does not sting the eyes, the dissolved makeup that can run down into the eyes does. So still follow up with cotton tips/squares soaked in eye-makeup remover to remove your eyeliner and mascara.
Also note that both the hand and face need to be dry when using any of the Shu Uemura cleansing oils. Any water that comes in contact with this cleansing oil will emulsify it and eliminates its cleansing powers.
As for the rest of the face – the Fresh Pore Clarifying variant definitely leaves a fresher feel on the face in comparison to the other variants in the Shu Uemura line (I got a little sample pack when I made this purchase and tried them all during my travels in the last few months). For my oily skin, I find it to be a very comfortable clean feeling – my face still feels nice and soft afterwards, and I experienced no breakouts.
This cleansing oil is enough as a one-step makeup remover and cleanser, should you be pressed for time. I’m a fan of double cleansing (and I have sooo many cleansers for some reason) so I still use a gel cleanser afterwards.
Summary:
I’ve not tried any other brands of cleansing oils but the Shu Uemura Fresh Pore Clarifying Gentle Cleansing Oil does the job for me. It removes all my makeup in one cleanse, leaves my face feeling clean but not tight, and does not cause any breakouts.
The big jumbo 450ml size will last me a good 12 months (I only use it at night), so I’ll be happy to repurchase it when I finish the current bottle.
Shu Uemura Fresh Pore Clarifying Gentle Cleansing Oil retails for US$31 for 150ml; US$67/NT$2,400 for 450ml and is available from Shu Uemura counters globally.
