Skinfood Salmon Brightening Eye Serum

Skinfood is a popular Korean brand of skincare and cosmetic products.  I had previously blogged about 2 of their BB creams – Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream and Mushroom Multi Care BB Cream, both of which I find very good.

So since then I’ve been really wanting to try their skincare range, and was particularly drawn to their Salmon eye range.

 Skinfood Salmon Brightening Eye Serum

I picked up the Skinfood Salmon Brightening Eye Serum as the lighter texture would be more suitable for my oily skin.

What they say:

Skinfood Salmon Brightening Eye Serum contains Arbutin and the extracts of Omega 3 rich salmon roe produced in Hokkaido, Japan.  This eye serum brightens and relieves dark circles around the eyes.

My experience:

I just adore the packaging of SkinFood products – a little earthy, a little country and a LOT cutesy.  Luckily at that time I was only in Taiwan for a short visit and planning for the big move, so I didn’t walk away with half of the store icon biggrin Skinfood Salmon Brightening Eye Serum

The Salmon Brightening Eye Serum is in a fairly simple airless pump but the design on the label and brushed metal-like exterior make all the difference.

The nozzle is nice and small which is great, as it allows you to be able to dispense the tiniest amount as required.

The “serum” is more of a gel cream.  It distributes nicely on the skin, is quite heavily fragranced but I don’t find it overpowering or unpleasant.

After using the eye serum religiously for a few weeks, and then on and off for the last few months, I have to say that I haven’t experienced any of the brightening effects.  The eye area does feel soft and hydrated, but no more than if I just use my regular face lotion or cream on that area.

Summary

With so many products in my usual skincare repertoire, I have to say eye cream is not usually a part of it.  Mainly because I have not yet found an eye product that makes much difference, and unfortunately the Skinfood Salmon Brightening Eye Serum is one of them.

Even though the Skinfood Salmon Brightening Eye Serum is light enough to not cause any white dots under my eyes, it’s still too rich for the rest of my face, causing me to break out a little in my efforts to using the product up.

I guess this will still make a cute little gift for someone icon smile Skinfood Salmon Brightening Eye Serum

SkinFood Mushroom Multi Care BB Cream SPF PA+

Since trying the SkinFood cactus BB cream,  I was very keen to try more from them.  The Mushroom BB Cream is a triple function BB cream that SkinFood claims to “contain skin-friendly aloe & mushroom extract, adenosine and arbutin that helps to improve the appearance of fine lines and promotes a brighter, more radiant complexion with UV protection properties”.

I’ll be reviewing all BB Creams on the following criteria:

  1. Packaging
  2. Coverage
  3. Dry to touch finish
  4. Natural skin feel
  5. Fragrance
  6. Longevity

Packaging: 4.5/5

SkinFood Mushroom Multi Care BB Cream SPF PA+

Thank goodness the Mushroom BB Cream doesn’t come with a sponge applicator!  It’s in my favourite form: flat tube with screw on cap, and flat nozzle.  It also contains 50g of product which is quite generous.

The tube is a lovely earthy beige colour with matte finish, and the labels and outer cap is printed/embossed/pearlised recycle paper.  I love the look of it – although have read that the paper can disintegrate after coming in contact with water, so is not as travel-friendly as regular printed tubes.

Coverage: 4.5/5

SkinFood Mushroom Multi Care BB Cream SPF PA+

The texture of the BB cream is a gel-cream, so its coverage is slightly less than the cactus BB cream and the Missha M Signature Real Complete BB Cream, but is still pretty high.  It also does not sink into lines which is awesome – and you can see how flawless my hand is!

I take 0.5 point off as for some reason, no matter how I apply it, it’s not buildable.  So a concealer is a must when using this – which I need for the redness under my eyes, along my nose bridge, and either sides of my nostrils.

Dry-to-touch finish: 5/5

Even though the SkinFood Mushroom BB Cream doesn’t have a powdery finish like the Vichy one, it completely melts into the skin, leaving no stickiness.  I can get away with not using a powder except for my eye area (but that’s to help my eye makeup application).

Natural skin feel: 5/5

Love, love LOVE how natural this BB Cream is!  As it melts into the skin and that it’s not buildable, this BB cream is foolproof.  No matter how heavy handed you are, it will not give you a mask face.

The colour seem a bit pink when first applied but quickly adapts to the natural skin tone.  It also has a semi-dewy finish which is perfection in achieving the my-skin-but-better result.

In addition, this BB cream comes in 2 shades (stated in the little circle on back of back, see the upper right-hand pic under packaging).  So if you’re a little darker, pick #2 as oppose to #1.

Fragrance: 4.5/5

I don’t know how SkinFood does it, but there is no sunscreen smell at all with either of the two BB Cream I’ve tried.  The Mushroom BB Cream also has a botanical smell.  But rather than a grassy/floral smell, it’s a woody, medicinal smell.  It’s rather hard to describe… kinda like the inside of a wet tree branch when you snap it in half.

I quite like the smell as I’m mad for anything botanical, and I happen to like Chinese medicine.  But it can be unpleasant to some – especially when the scent does not fade.

Longevity: 4/5

This is probably as good as it can get, when it comes to longevity on my oily face.  The SkinFood Mushroom BB Cream actually lasts a good 6 hours on my face, which is rather incredible considering it still has a somewhat dewy finish.

Even better, even after blotting, there is still enough BB Cream left on my face which I can re-distribute by rubbing it around.

TOTAL SCORE: 27.5 OUT OF 30

The SkinFood Mushroom Multi Care BB Cream SPF PA+ is without a doubt, my favourite BB Cream so far.  It’s easy to apply, looks great, lasts a long time and does not break me out.  I think it’ll suit all skin types too.  And just another little tip: for a porcelain flawless finish, use a silicon base primer underneath – hello doll face!!

SkinFood Mushroom Multi Care BB Cream SPF PA+ is available in 2 shades, normall retails for US$34.40 but is on special for US$18.60 on Sasa.com – so get it NOW!!!

SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream SPF36 PA+++

SkinFood is a Korean brand of skincare and makeup, and is the first cosmetic brand using food ingredients in their formulation.  SkinFood believes that all skin care needs – moisturising, nourishing, firming, and luminosity can be met with food, and they source all over the world for the best food ingredients.

I’ve heard good things about their BB Creams, so the awesome Jac of ChloeBlue Likes to Sparkle sent me this BB Cream which is too dark for her.

I’ll be reviewing all BB Creams on the following criteria:

  1. Packaging
  2. Coverage
  3. Dry to touch finish
  4. Natural skin feel
  5. Fragrance
  6. Longevity

Packaging: 1/5

SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream SPF36 PA+++

The packaging is the dreaded sponge applicator – yuck!!!   Sponge applicators are so unhygienic and does not offer any convenience in application.  Jac already removed the sponge before sending it to me, which I’m thankful for as I get grossed out just looking at sponge applicators – imagine all the germs that can fester inside them!

Luckily the middle bit that house the sponge applicator can be removed as well, and you can squeeze the product through the nozzle.  Unfortunately still, the tube is quite hard, so you will need to use a bit of strength to squeeze out the product.  This gets harder as the product inside gets used, so I won’t be able to get all the BB Cream out of the tube.

Coverage: 5/5

SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream SPF36 PA+++

I LOVE the coverage of this BB Cream, a little goes a long way and is buildable for any blemishes or areas where you want more coverage.  Unlike a lot of BB Creams this does not sink into the lines – look how flawless my hand looks!

Dry-to-touch finish: 4.5/5

This BB Cream is really sticky, so you need to rub it into the skin for a nice finish.  Once rubbed in though, the majority of the stickiness goes away.  I use the tiniest bit of translucent powder to remove the last bit of sticky feeling on my face.

Natural skin feel: 4/5

When applying the SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream make sure you: (i) only use tiny amounts at a time, and (ii) really rub it in.  Due to its stickiness, if you don’t rub it in properly, you can easily pile on too much product and end up with the horrible “foundation mask” look.  It takes a while to get the hang of it, but once you do, you can get the perfectly flawless yet natural skin every girl dreams of!

The finish is dewy but not shiny, again it’s a little pink when first applied, but then adapts to your natural skin colour.

Fragrance: 5/5

Amazingly, the SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream not only has no sunscreen smell, it actually has a light botanical fragrance: my favourite!

Longevity: 4/5

Like its texture, this BB Cream sticks on my face nicely – staying put for 6 or so hours.  I’ve also noticed that even when my face does start to get oily, somehow it doesn’t look shiny (ie. still in the realms of dewiness).  It does wear off in patches though.

TOTAL SCORE: 23.5 OUT OF 30

It is such a shame that the SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream is packaged so terribly.  It gives great finish, looks flawless, smells great and did not break me out.  I think this product will suit all skin types too, so if you’re happy to deal with the awful packaging, it’s worth checking out.

SkinFood Agave Cactus Sun BB Cream SPF36 PA+++ retails for US$18.70 and is available on Sasa.com.
